About this file
This is an Installation & Operations Manual for the Honeywell Security Archive Workstation V5 (SAW-V5), a Windows-based application designed to archive system event data and generate activity reports for Vindicator security systems. The SAW-V5 operates as a peripheral to the V5 IDS Server, receiving data via RS-485 serial connection over the Console Bus. The system consists of hardware components including a Vindicator Server computer, Sealevel 7201 Serial port expander module, dual-display VGA card, optional 17-inch flat panel monitor or rack-mounted 14-inch CRT display, and peripherals such as printers. The manual provides comprehensive guidance on mechanical installation (including rack-mounting specifications with Honeywell part numbers 396-31755-00 for CPU and 396-31756-00 for monitor kits), electrical installation requirements (22 AWG twisted-pair unspliced copper cable for Console Bus connections, transient protection specifications, and grounding standards), physical connection procedures for RS-485 and RS-232 interfaces, and DIP switch configurations for the PR-1100 dot matrix printer.
The software installation section details the Windows Installer (.msi) deployment process for both SAW-V5 and Proteus5 applications, which must be installed by users with administrative privileges. Proteus5 is configured as a Windows service for automatic startup following system boot and requires specific command-line installation procedures. Operations guidance covers system initialization, user management with password configuration, log file management through the Apex log file system (stored in C:\APEXLOGS as APEX#### .LOG files with default 6.3 MB size limits and maximum 630 MB storage capacity), data table import/export functions, and report generation across four categories: Point Events (IDS alarms), Access Control Events (portal activity and credential holder reports), Communication Events (device failures and recoveries), and Operator's Logs. Critical files requiring backup include SmartSave5 configuration databases and Apex log files; application files are located in C:\Program Files\Saw-V5\ and C:\Program Files\Proteus\ directories.

Honeywell INTRODUCTION Terminology & Conventions
Version 5.1 1 SAW-V5
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this manual is to instruct the user on how to install and operate the Security Archive Workstation 5 (SAW-V5). The SAW-V5 software is a peripheral to the V5 and allows the user to archive system event data for the purpose of activity report generation. In addition the SAW-V5 software package includes another application called SmartSave5, which allows the user to backup their site-specific V5 configuration into an access database for later retrieval.
Terminology The SAW-V5 is a Windows® NT/2K/XP application that conforms to Windows specifications and rules of operation. Standard Windows terminology has been used throughout this document. Microsoft™ supplied Windows documentation, or most other books about Windows, can be referenced to explain any of the terms the user might not already know or are outside the scope of this document.
There are many words that are unique to the SAW-V5 peripheral, and these application specific terms are defined in the Glossary of this manual.
Conventions
1. Keys (like the Enter key and the Esc key) are shown in initial caps.
2. Command buttons that the operator clicks with the mouse are shown in a box like this: Edit
3. Screen titles and named objects in the system are shown with initial caps.
4. An Italic font is used for emphasis.
5. A Bold italic font is used for even greater emphasis.
System Organization The SAW fulfills the need for long-term storage of Vindicator system configuration and event data. This is accomplished via two programs: the SAW-V5 and the SmartSave5 applications. Both of these programs are Microsoft Access™ based applications. Additionally, the Proteus program provides a communications link within the Vindicator network. The SAW-V5 receives data from the Vindicator network system via an RS-485 balanced line serial data link. This link is typically called the Console Bus provided by the V5 IDS Server System.
Figure 1 illustrates the data flow throughout the system. Briefly, information flows via Proteus5, through the application programs to the screen, printer, and files.

The SAW-V5 displays information, creates printed reports, and exports information into files for use by other computer applications.
SmartSave5 manages the storage of V5 IDS and ACS Server configuration information. This allows for fast restoration of the site-specific configuration when a device is replaced with a spare in lieu of the user having to manually reconfigure the new unit.
Proteus5 is a service program that acquires system data and manages data flow to the SAW-V5 and SmartSave5 applications. Proteus5 must constantly run, and when installed at the factory it is installed as a Windows service that starts automatically following system boot up.
Honeywell INTRODUCTION System Organization
Version 5.1 3 SAW-V5
The Apex Log File Proteus5 saves the raw data received from the Vindicator Security Network in a series of files called Apex log files. These files are stored in the C:\APEXLOGS directory under the name APEXxxxx.LOG. (Where xxxx represents the log file number) As each log file fills to a specified size with data, a new log file is created. The log file currently used for storing data is called the Active log file.
The active log file can be found at the top right hand side of the Proteus5 application window.
Note Log files are numbered sequentially. The first is named APEX0000.LOG, the next APEX0001.LOG and so on. The default SAW-V5 configuration opens a new log file whenever the current active log file reaches 6.3 Mbytes in size.
After 100 log files are accumulated, the next new log file opened replaces the first log file. This implies that a maximum of 630 MB of log file storage is possible before the system begins overwriting the oldest log files. At a continuous event rate of one sensor change every three seconds, this provides approximately 1 year of event data storage. If the system is more active there will be less storage available and if the system is less active the storage amount increases. The configuration for the logger is contained in the Proteus.ini file that is discussed in the section on Error! Not a valid result for table. that starts on page 101.
Usually, the log files that contain old data are removed from the hard drive and archived on removable media like a CD-R, so that they can be accessed at a later time if necessary.
Log Files and Data Tables Requests of the event data in the log files are processed in a database for review and printed reports. The database information is contained in the form of a data table. The data table, if a user could see it, would look something like a bookkeeper’s ledger. Information about each event is stored in a row, called a record. Each record is further divided into columns, called fields. The SAW-V5 reads event log data then organizes events that meet user defined criteria into data tables. The SAW-V5 also stores the V5 IDS Server and V5 ACS Server site-specific configuration information in database tables. The configuration information is used to properly describe alarm points, and access control events when forming an event report.
Backing Up Data The most important information to back up on the SAW-V5 is the SmartSave5 database and the Apex log files. The SmartSave5 is used to backup the V5 IDS Server and V5 ACS Server system configuration data so that it can be quickly restored in the event of a device failure. The Apex log files contain the history of system events. Together, these two categories of information are critical to system management.
It is also wise to backup the ancillary application programs and Microsoft database files (.MDB). Although these files do not store unique information, it is wise to periodically copy these files to removable storage for safekeeping.

Installation Practices INSTALLATION Honeywell
Version 5.1 6 SAW-V5
INSTALLATION
The computer and monitor used in the SAW-V5 may differ from one unit to another. The user should consider the instructions in this chapter to be generic, understanding that the arrangement of connectors, appearance of the front panels, monitors, etc., are subject to change.
Facility Layout & Planning By taking some time to review system requirements before commencing work, one can ensure that the installation proceeds in a timely and efficient manner.
Installation planning of the SAW-V5 should include consideration for backup power, computer location, and Console Bus signal transmission.
Develop a detailed installation plan, including electrical wiring and terminal box locations, prior to system installation.
Document all installation data such as equipment and wiring diagrams before beginning installation. Record deviations from the prescribed installation plans on “as-built” drawings.
Review equipment power requirements to ensure that adequate AC power is available.
Verify that all areas in which equipment is to be installed maintain environmental conditions suitable for that equipment. The total heat generated by all the equipment installed in a console or other enclosure must not lead to ambient temperatures that exceed that of the equipment’s specified ratings.
Ensure that environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, EMI, RFI, etc., have been considered and accommodated. For example, the SAW-V5 is an unshielded computer, and should not be operated in the immediate vicinity of strong radio sources such as base station transmitters or hand held radios.
Check to ensure that all wiring meets applicable codes, and that wire gauge and ground wires are appropriate for intended use.
Installation Practices Observe the following guidelines when installing:
All mounting surfaces must be clean and free of dirt or corrosion.
Equipment should lie flat on mounting surfaces to ensure maximum heat dissipation.
Rack mounted PC's should be forced air cooled to reduce temperature build-up in the enclosure.
Enclosures must be properly grounded. Do not rely on mounting standards for this purpose.
Surge protectors should be well grounded.
Any terminal box containing a backup battery must be vented to protect against buildup of battery gasses (hydrogen): even sealed batteries will vent under adverse conditions, and battery gases are explosive. AC interlock switches that have been installed for technician safety may ignite these gasses when operated. If a venting hole is not possible, a separate battery enclosure that does not contain switching of high voltages should be considered.
Honeywell INSTALLATION Facility Layout & Planning
Version 5.1 7 SAW-V5
Unpacking and Storing Equipment When unpacking, check the contents of each container against the packing slip.
Inspect each piece of equipment to ensure that damage has not occurred during transit and report any damage or discrepancies to Vindicator’s customer service department immediately. If possible, retain shipping containers for future use, especially the CPU box.
If equipment has to be stored be sure to store only in a clean, dry area. Keep equipment in original shipping containers. Some items contain batteries.
Tool Requirements The following tools are required:
Flat head screwdrivers (set) Phillips screwdrivers (set) Wire cutter with insulated grips Wire stripper Oscilloscope Volt-Ohm meter RJ-11 Modular Plug Crimp Kit Spade lug crimping tool
Mechanical Installation INSTALLATION Honeywell
Version 5.1 8 SAW-V5
Mechanical Installation When installing components, it is best practice to orient them in the most practical configurations for optimum performance and future maintenance.
Components should be positioned and suitable room left for easy access to terminals and mounting hardware.
The standard SAW-V5 is comprised of a Vindicator Server computer, a Sealevel 7201 Serial port expander module, dual-display VGA card, and the SAW-V5 software package. An optional 17-inch flat panel monitor may be specified with the SAW if desired. It is typically used in a desktop installation; although rack mounted versions may be provided by special order. Rack installations require the use of a smaller CRT display, and rack-mounting kits for the CPU (Vindicator PN 396-31755-00) and Monitor (Vindicator PN 396-31756-00, 14"
RACK MOUNT CRT KIT).
Rack Mount CRT Display Dimensions for the SAW-V5 in the rack-mounting kit are shown in the following figures.

Electrical Installation
General Considerations Standard commercial electrical practices should always prevail when wiring an alarm monitoring system. Whenever possible, run the Console Bus wires within protected areas, preferably in conduit. Failure to adequately protect the signal lines will affect the security of the installation.
Only fire and security grade system cabling should be used for the monitoring system. Use local building codes and construction specifications as a guide.
Never use the same cable or conduit for intercoms, telephone signals, ac power, or other purposes. Always clearly identify monitoring system wiring on wiring diagrams, and provide identifying marks or tags on the wires.
It is a good idea to pull spare lines and fibers whenever possible. Roll excess cabling into wire boxes or wrap around the interior of the equipment enclosure to avoid the necessity for later splicing.
If the environment is electrically noisy, shielded cable may be used; shielding should be grounded at one end only to minimize ground loops and ensure effective operation.
Provide service loops for rack mounted equipment to facilitate easy removal from the rack, being sure to keep loops at least equal to the depth of the rack..
Most system components must be connected using twisted pair 22 AWG (or larger), unspliced, computer data grade copper cable. Some peripheral equipment uses fiber optic cable, broadband coax, or 3002 voice-grade telephone circuits equipped with suitable modems.
Important Do not use 3002 or any other telephone circuits with the Console Bus or other busses that use RS-485 or RS-232 signaling methods. RS-485 signals must utilize twisted-pair wire.
Cabling Considerations When installing cabling, Vindicator always recommends the use of spare wire pairs (or fiber optic cables) to accommodate future expansion requirements and the damage that may be done to cables by lightning or by future construction efforts. As a general rule of thumb, installing twice the number of wire pairs required to meet current needs will help to satisfy most future needs and reduce down-time in the event of a cable fault.
Honeywell INSTALLATION Electrical Installation
Version 5.1 11 SAW-V5
The SAW 5 has the following cable requirements.
Table 2 Cabling Requirements
Console (Proteus5) Bus One twisted pair 22 AWG or larger, stranded or solid, data grade, unspliced hookup wire. Cable may be shielded or unshielded as required by the installation environment.
Note Since the Console Bus is not encrypted, it should only be deployed within suitable protected areas.
Ideally, only within the same tampered rack enclosure as the V5.
AC input power As required by local electrical codes.
Grounding As required by local electrical codes. Device grounds of products communicating via RS- 422/RS-485 must be within 2.0 volts of each other for reliable operation.
Peripherals Peripherals, including the Printer and CRT display require multiple conductor control cables. The display cable is a standard 15 pin VGA cable and is supplied as part of the SAW-V5. The Printer cable is either a Centronics type parallel cable, an RS-232 serial data cable or USB cable depending on the exact model of printer used. Consult the applicable product manuals for details.
Transient Protection The RS-485 serial port of the SAW-V5 is protected against static discharge, but not against higher energy transients. The Console Bus is not designed for deployment outside the immediate area of the V5 IDS Server. Any Console Bus deployment outside the area of the V5 IDS Server must be fully protected against transients and EMI/RFI.
In transient-prone installations, the installation administrator should provide suitable protectors, selected and sized for RS-485 bus compatibility.
Provide protection for ac power and any control signals or busses that leave the interior of the building housing the equipment. These protectors, along with the console equipment, should be attached to an earth ground stake. The earth ground stake should measure 10Ω or less, when measured using the true fall of potential method prescribed in IEEE 142. All tests must be made in normally dry weather, not less than 48 hours after any rainfall. The use of external surge protectors should be considered in addition to the protection afforded by the Vindicator equipment. When the limits of surge protectors are exceeded these devices usually fail in a fail-safe mode (short or low impedance). In so doing these circuits are destroyed. It is usually easier and less expensive to replace an external module than the piece of equipment being protected.
Electrical Installation INSTALLATION Honeywell
Version 5.1 12 SAW-V5
Wire Termination Use spade lugs where appropriate for proper electrical connections. Use a complete-action crimper designed for the installation of spade lugs for best connections. Use only tinned wire cable because exposed copper is vulnerable to corrosion. For terminal blocks not requiring spade lugs, Vindicator recommends that the stranded wires not be tinned. This type of termination does not work well with the jaw clamp terminal blocks used on the V5 IDS Server System Master and UHS transponders. Wire markers should be used to identify wiring, and a log or as-built drawings should be kept to help locate specific wires and speed troubleshooting. The use of unique colors for each wire can also be helpful.
WARNING Wiring connections should be made while power is disconnected from the equipment. Do not connect either AC power or stand-by batteries until all wiring connections have been completed and fully tested against both missing connections (opens) and cross connections (shorts) with an ohmmeter.
Pre-Installation Testing The SAW-V5 has been tested before leaving the factory, but it is a good idea to verify that all the cables have been connected correctly, that power is available to all the components, and that normal communications between components is occurring. Knowing that the SAW-V5 is functioning correctly at this level simplifies troubleshooting when the full system is brought on-line.
If possible, configure, connect, and test the system before delivering equipment to the site.
The following procedure will give you quick verification that the SAW-V5 is functioning correctly.
1. Connect the display, the Computer, keyboard and mouse as shown in Figure 4. Do not apply power.
3. Apply power to the system. After a few moments the screen should light up and the windows login prompt appears, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to log in.
4. Log in as the Administrator. The Proteus5 application should launch automatically following logging on.
5. Shutdown the Computer via the Start menu. Power off the machine when instructed it is safe to do so.
Note: Use “Administrator” (without the quotes) for the name and the password is “sysmgr” when logging on the first time the system has been powered up.
Additional operators can be added later.
If Error Messages Occur If you do not get the Proteus5 application display upon log in, additional steps may be required to setup the SAW-V5. This information is discussed in the chapter on Commissioning.

Version 5.1 14 SAW-V5
Proteus Console Bus Connection The Security Administration Workstation (SAW-V5) connects to the V5 IDS Server Console bus (a.k.a Proteus). The default Console bus connection is on port G1 of the V5 IDS Server Communication I/O module.
RS-485 SAW-V5 Connection The SAW-V5 computer is connected to the Console bus in one of two ways depending on the type of the serial interface. All new SAW-V5 computers are provided with an internal RS-485 compliant serial interface while older legacy type SAW4 machines require a separate RS-232 to RS-485 converter module.
A connection to the internal RS-485 type of SAW-V5 merely requires the appropriate cable assemble (P/N 544-32324-01) as shown in Figure 5 below.
The PC end of the connector is a 9-Pin “DIN” style connector while the V5 end is a 5-position terminal block type connector.

Honeywell INSTALLATION Software Installation
Version 5.1 19 SAW-V5
Software Installation The user should not have to install software because the SAW-V5 is delivered with all software preinstalled from the factory. However, in the event of system failure or field upgrade all installation programs are provided on the Software CD that accompanied the order and these can be used to reinstall the software onto the replacement PC. This section will cover the installation of the SAW- V5 and Proteus Software applications.
Vindicator has implemented a Microsoft Windows Installer compliant installation file for the SAW-V5 application known as “SAW-V5.msi” as well as one for the Proteus5 application known as “Proteus.msi”. These files greatly simplify the installation of the application(s).
The Microsoft Windows Installer is a software installation and configuration service. Windows Installer is a component of the Windows operating system that simplifies the application installation process.
Windows Installer manages the installation and removal of applications by applying a set of centrally defined setup rules during the installation process.
These setup rules define the installation and configuration of the installed application. In addition, the user can use this service to modify, repair, or remove an existing application. The Windows Installer technology consists of the Windows Installer service for the Windows operating systems and the package (.msi) file format used to hold information regarding the application setup and installations.
Windows Installer is not only an installation program; it is also an extensible software management system. Windows Installer manages the installation, addition, and deletion of software components, monitors file resiliency, and maintains basic disaster recovery by way of rollbacks. Additionally, Windows Installer supports installing and running software from multiple sources, and can be customized by developers that want to install custom applications.
The SAW-V5 application programs consist the following items on the computer.
The specific directories are:
1. C:\APEXLOGS for the raw data files;
2. C:\VIN for common configuration files; and
3. C:\Program Files\SAW-V5\ for the database files.
4. C:\Program Files\Proteus\ for the Proteus application.
5. C:\Winnt\ (NT/2K) C:\Windows (XP) for the Proteus5 initialization file: PROTEUS.INI and the APEX32.DLL.

OPERATIONS
General Operations The SAW-V5 is a Windows 2000/XP compatible application that looks and operates much like other Windows applications. A basic knowledge of Windows is required prior to operating the SAW-V5. If a user is new to Windows, time should be given to learn the basics before any attempt to monitor a security system using this software.
Two methods are usually used to learn Windows — there is a Windows user’s manual and an online Windows Help Menu with a tutorial. The Windows Help Menu is located on the Start button menu. Choose the appropriate starting point based on the operator’s level of experience – select specific topics or start as a new user.
