About this file
This is the Tinker Air Force Base Fire Protection Standard, 2023 Edition, establishing minimum requirements for fire protection and life safety for all projects at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. The document is issued by the Base Civil Engineer (72 ABW/CE) and approved by Stephanie P. Wilson, Director of 72 ABW/CE, effective March 2023.
The standard serves as the primary fire protection criteria reference for planning, design, construction, and procurement of facilities at Tinker AFB. Key requirements include: fire-rated wall identification and labeling per International Building Code standards; firestopping installation by FM Research-approved or UL Certified contractors with manufacturer training certification and independent inspection by IQP, IFC, or approved equivalent inspectors; submission of UL-tested or engineered firestop details, material certifications, and inspection reports. Fire protection systems requirements specify: KNOXBOX Model 3200 (recessed, non-monitored) for new construction and preferred for renovations; interior fire lanes for Buildings 3001 and 9001 with 20-foot continuous width, safety red markings, and 6-inch white lettering; newly installed fire hydrants with one 4" Storz outlet and two 2.5" NHT outlets, painted OSHA Safety Yellow with reflective caps per modified NFPA 291 colors. Automatic sprinkler systems must be installed by NICET Level III contractors; piping shall be black steel Schedule 40 painted with two coats of Red No. 1110; Fire Department Connections require 4" Storz x 4" Female NPT with 30-degree bend; exterior waterflow alarms must be electrically operated and function independently from building fire alarm control units. Fire alarm systems require NICET Level III installation; Monroe Enterprises equipment with point-to-point reporting to base supervising station; addressable systems with specific labeling requirements on initiating and notification devices; textual display signs programmed for "Evacuate" or "Announcement" messages; all circuits in minimum ¾" EMT conduit with red circuit breaker locks. Detailed mass notification system (MNS) message specifications are provided for eight message types covering fire emergencies, carbon monoxide detection, hazardous conditions, security breaches, severe weather, all-clear signals, and system tests, including specific alert sound frequencies, voice gender, announcement timing, and visual notification requirements. Prior to first fire protection submittals, designers must coordinate with 72d ABW/CE Contracted Alarm Shop, Fire Prevention Branch, and Project Management Branch personnel.
