Who We Are and What We Do:
Economic Development in Fairfax County, Virginia
Fairfax County is the economic engine of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Washington, D.C., region. The county is lauded as one of the world’s most diverse and resilient business locations and a leading innovation and technology hub. Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) has played a critical role in making this success happen.
Fairfax County is home to companies from Fortune 500s to some of the nation’s fastest-growing start-ups. It has become a popular U.S. entry point for international companies – more than 1,000 foreign-owned firms have a presence in Fairfax County – and it is home to one of the most dynamic minority-owned business communities in the nation.
Fairfax County businesses are among world leaders in business and professional services, especially in technology sectors such as aerospace, artificial intelligence, software, cloud computing, data analytics, cybersecurity, defense and homeland security technology, financial services and health IT. Growing Fairfax County businesses are attractive targets for venture capitalists who invest in emerging technology companies.
Fairfax County is the second-largest suburban office market in the U.S., with 119.5 million square feet of office space. Two areas of Fairfax County, Tysons, and Reston, are among the largest central business districts in the U.S.
More than 650,000 people work in Fairfax County today.
Chartered by the Commonwealth of Virginia, the FCEDA is led by a board of county business leaders and funded by the Fairfax County government to promote the county as one of the world’s best business locations and build the county’s commercial tax base. FCEDA does that by collaborating with companies to establish and expand operations here. With colleagues in the Northern Virginia Economic Development Alliance, FCEDA has also developed the Fairfax County-funded Work in Northern Virginia talent initiative to attract, retain, retrain, and grow the workforce that companies need to grow here.
In addition to our headquarters in Tysons, FCEDA has representatives in Bangalore/Mumbai, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Seoul, and Tel Aviv. Our business investment representatives in those important business centers collaborate with companies that are interested in establishing a presence in the Washington area.
Nearly 1.2 million people live in Fairfax County, and that number is projected to increase to more than 1.3 million by 2040. FCEDA will continue to provide a wide array of free and confidential services to attract and retain businesses and talent.
Thanks to a strong, diversified economy and commercial tax base, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors funds high-quality public services. These services are a key component of the quality of life for which Fairfax County is known around the nation and the world. June 2025
