About this file

This is a geotechnical boring data and test pit documentation file for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 8 SR 0083-078 Eisenhower Interchange project located in Swatara Township, Dauphin County. The file contains comprehensive engineer's logs, standard penetration test (SPT) results, rock core recovery data, and core box photography from multiple boring locations (SBC05-01, SBC05-02, RB-58, SBB24-01 through SBB24-08, RB-32, RB-33, and RB-33A) conducted between July 2021 and April 2022. The borings extend to depths ranging from approximately 10 feet to 68 feet below ground surface, with ground elevations varying from approximately 389 to 417 feet. Material descriptions indicate predominantly fill materials in upper layers (silt, clay, sand, and gravel with varying percentages of bituminous and cement concrete fragments) transitioning to residuum and limestone bedrock at depth. SPT N-values range from very low (0-7 blows per foot) in soft materials to refusal conditions (>50 blows) in dense fills and competent rock.

The geological investigation reveals significant stratigraphic variation across the project corridor, with limestone encountered at depths ranging from approximately 10 to 59 feet depending on boring location. Rock quality designation (RQD) values for limestone cores range from 0 to 100 percent, indicating variable rock quality from poor to excellent. Casing depths at refusal ranged from 10.3 to 51.5 feet, with most borings reaching limestone or achieving auger refusal within 27 to 47.5 feet. The limestone is generally described as hard, fresh to moderately weathered, gray to blue-gray, with narrow to medium bedding, jointing characteristics ranging from moderate to close spacing, and shaley interbeds. Chemical testing was performed on selected soil samples (S-6 to S-8 from boring RB-58 and S-7 and S-8 from boring SBB24-03). All borings were completed with grouting, and casing was installed using hollow stem augers, flush joint casing, or spun casing methods. This subsurface information provides the geotechnical foundation for design of the pump station and associated wastewater infrastructure.
