About this file

The document is a System for Award Management (SAM) Quick Start Guide for entities interested in registering to bid on government contracts. The guide provides step-by-step instructions for businesses, organizations, and individuals to register their entities in the SAM system, which is a free online platform for government contract opportunities. Key registration requirements include obtaining a DUNS number, having a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), and completing multiple sections of online registration such as core data, assertions, representations and certifications, and points of contact.

The registration process involves creating an individual account on www.sam.gov, selecting the type of entity, and providing detailed business information including DUNS number, TIN, CAGE/NCAGE codes, business structure, financial details, and contact information. The entire registration process takes approximately 3-5 days to become active, with additional time needed for obtaining a DUNS number (1-2 business days) and an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS (2-5 weeks). The guide emphasizes that sole proprietors can use their Social Security Number if they do not have a TIN, and foreign entities with no U.S. employees have slightly different requirements.

• It takes 1-2 business days to obtain a DUNS.

Your Entity’s Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)

You need your entity’s Tax ID Number (TIN) and taxpayer name (as it appears on your last tax return). Foreign entities that do not pay employees within the U.S. do not need to provide a TIN.

• A TIN is an Employer Identification Number (EIN) assigned by the

Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

• Sole proprietors may use their Social Security Number (SSN) assigned by the Social Security Administration (SSA) if they do not have a TIN, but please be advised it will not be treated as privacy act data in SAM.

• To obtain an EIN visit:
