Organization : Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN)
Grant Period: June 2, 2025 - December 31, 2026
Grant Amount: $300,000.00
Grant Overview
Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) is a community-based organization that fosters health, wellness, and healing in the inner-city by organizing for social change through holistic programming including the operation of a Federally Qualified Health Center. IMAN incorporated as a nonprofit in 1997 through the drive of people directly affected by and deeply invested in social issues affecting communities of color.
IMAN purposefully and intentionally resides in the disenfranchised and marginalized communities of Chicago Lawn and Englewood on Chicago’s South Side. The Chicago Lawn and
Englewood neighborhoods have an average household median income of $24,912 to $31,900, well below the Illinois average household median which is $100,719, a nearly $70,000 plus difference. Very often in marginalized BIPOC communities access to general and quality healthcare, education, nutritious foods, viable employment opportunities and affordable housing are an ever present barrier to living a full, thriving and successful life. The vast disparities in the average household median income creates a cycle of poverty which forces individuals to only survive, having to prioritize choices such as rent vs. healthcare or grocery vs. medicine.
Furthermore, a significant number of these individuals are living outside of the labor force so the average income is even lower than the reported household income medians. The cycle of poverty and access in most cases are directly tied to structural and systemic racism.
Unfortunately, this landscape is very challenging to navigate or escape without the proper support and connections. This is the space where IMAN’s mission and staff align to combat these barriers through our Green ReEntry and Weekend Warriors Programs as well as other programmatic efforts.
Through a symbiotic partnership with Daley, IMAN plans to provide Daley with a pipeline of students through our program which produces 200 applicants annually while leveraging Daley to provide students with educational opportunities that can lead to sustainable employment opportunities. Most of our participants are either unemployed, under-employed or lack the qualifications that will allow them to gain meaningful, sustainable employment. Richard J.
Daley’s qualified instructors and state of the art manufacturing and construction programs will provide our Green ReEntry: Weekend Warriors (WW) and Manufacturing Basics Cohort (MBC) program participants with industry best practices, industry credentials and certifications that will prepare them for gainful employment and thus helping IMAN to stabilize their future.
IMAN’s intensive, semester-based weekend program aims to strategically engage selected individuals during Chicago's volatile weekends. Research has shown that placing the proper supports around these individuals and removing barriers to basic human need supports as well as providing soft -skill support will positively change their trajectory. IMAN’s program participants are given a semester of “soft skills” training prior to entering the City Colleges coursework, allowing them to build relationships with each other and staff and providing skill and character building sessions that increase their chances for success. To further incentivize participants, they are provided stipends to help offset the costs of personal/familial needs, so they are able to focus on their studies during programming. On an “as needed” basis, participants may receive transportation, food, housing and behavioral health support through IMAN’s holistic services model. This collective approach has a multi-pronged benefit as it supports program participants, their families and the community in the form of neighborhood stabilization and violence prevention.
