About this file
This document is a technical specification for two vertical balers required by the Fermi Research Alliance, LLC (FRA) for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Project at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, SD. The balers will be used to process waste consisting of cardboard, plastics, and non-ferrous metals in underground caverns.
The specification details precise technical requirements including: dimensions under 12'L x 4.4'W x 10.2'H, weight under 6,000 lbs, 10 hp submersible motor, 3-phase voltage options (208/230/480), hydraulic reservoir capacity under 50 gallons, and press force minimum of 80,000 lbs. The balers must produce bales under 60 cubic feet and 1,500 lbs, with a minimum of 5 bale ties and cycle time under 90 seconds. Post-award deliverables include customer support and operator manuals. The document also includes quality control requirements for the subcontractor to manage and document work compliance, including oversight of suppliers and sub-tier contractors.

SPECIFICATIONS LBNF/DUNE-US FDC
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 1
1. INTRODUCTION
Under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Fermi Research Alliance, LLC (FRA), is leading the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Project to enable a world-class program in neutrino physics.
Specifically, the LBNF Project (https://lbnf-dune.fnal.gov) provides the infrastructure for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), which will consist of two large liquid argon-based neutrino detectors located nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD. See Figure 1, LBNF/DUNE-US Schematic
The Far Detector & Cryogenics (FDC) subproject of LBNF/DUNE-US installs the cryostats, detectors, cryogenics and supporting infrastructure at the SURF laboratory.

2. STRUCTURE/COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
The vertical baler is a piece of equipment utilized to process waste consisting of cardboard, plastics, and non-ferrous metals. Two identical balers will be located in the underground caverns and will process this waste by means of compaction, resulting in a wired bale, which will then be transported to the surface for removal.
3. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
The vendor shall provide a vertical baler that meets the following requirements.
• Total Equipment Dimensions (with retracted cylinder) – Must be less than 12’L x 4.4’W x 10.2’H cage dimensions to allow for transport to the underground caverns.
• Total Equipment Weight - <6,000 lbs.
