About this file
This document is a Pump Specification for the PIP-II F37 Low Conductivity Water (LCW) Circulating Pump, issued by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. The specification details requirements for two identical horizontal axis, single-stage centrifugal pumps to be used in a closed-loop cooling water system with temperatures ranging from 60°F to 120°F. Key technical requirements include a Flowserve pump model 2K3x2-10ARV M3 ST, with an 8.56" impeller diameter, rated for 250 ft total developed head at 400 gpm, and a best efficiency point greater than 65%. The motors must be TEFC NEMA Premium, 3-phase, 480V, 60 Hz, IEEE-841 type, not exceeding 50 BHP, with a 1.15 service factor and Variable Frequency Drive readiness.
The specification mandates comprehensive performance testing prior to shipping, requiring detailed documentation including pump curves, dimensional drawings, seal specifications, motor performance data, recommended spare parts list, and complete warranty information. All wetted components must be type 316 stainless steel, and the pumps must conform to multiple ASME/ANSI standards. The procurement is structured with two identical pumps operating in parallel, with one in operation and one in standby, designed for reliable service life with minimal maintenance and low operational costs. Vendors must submit a comprehensive proposal meeting all outlined technical and documentation requirements to be considered for the contract.

1. GENERAL
1.1 Purpose
The intent of this specification is to define chemical/industrial type continuous duty centrifugal pumps for use in the F37 Pump Room for the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP- II) Low Conductivity Water (LCW) system.
1.2 Application
The LCW system provides cooling water circulated via a closed loop where the temperatures range from 60°F to 120°F. The LCW system relies on these pumps to operate continuously. The centrifugal pumps described in this specification must be designed for reliable service life with minimal maintenance and low operation costs.
1.3 Design
The pumps for this project shall conform to the standard requirements of ASME/ANSI B73.1M [Ref. 7.1]. The pumps shall be axial end suction, single stage, horizontal axis, top centerline discharge, flexible coupled, back pullout, foot mounted type. All metal components having wetting surfaces shall utilize stainless steel as the material of construction.
1.4 Manufacturer and Model
Manufacturer: Flowserve Model #2K3x2-10ARV M3 ST
2. DESIGN CONDITIONS AND SIZING REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Fluid Service
The fluid service is clean filtered water (LCW) with a nominal temperature of 82°F (60°F min., 120°F max.).
2.2 Configuration
The pumping system is designed to have two identical (2) horizontal axis single stage centrifugal pumps operating in parallel, with one of the pumps in operation and the second pump in standby.
2.3 Pump Performance
• Rated operating point capacity should be a total developed head of 250ft at 400 gpm per pump
• Best efficiency must be greater than 65%
• Best efficiency point (BEP) flow must be such that the rated operating point (250 ft at 400 gpm) is between 80% and 100% BEP flow (80% BEP flow < rated operating point < 100% BEP flow)
• Net positive suction head required (NPSHR) should not be greater than 30 feet
• Head rise to shut off must be at least 10% of the head at rated capacity (due to parallel pump configuration)
• Minimum recommended flow less than 60 GPM
2.4 Motor Capacity
The motor should be sized to cover the full operating range of the rated impeller from shutoff to the end-of-curve without the use of a service factor. The end-of-curve power is defined as 120% BEP flow. Service factor on pump shall be 1.15.
3. PUMP CONSTRUCTION
3.1 General
All wetted parts must be type 316 stainless steel (D4/CF8M) and permanently marked with the material of construction. A nameplate shall be securely attached at a readily visible location on the pump and meet the ANSI requirements [p. 13, Ref. 7.1].
3.2 Casing
• The pump casing shall be designed to meet the requirements of ASME/ANSI B73.1M
[p. 1-6, Ref. 7.1]
• Castings shall be sound and generally free from porosity, hot tears, shrink holes, blow holes, cracks, scale, blisters, and similar injurious defects
• Casing shall have a bottom drain boss drilled, tapped, and plugged
• Suction and discharge neck shall be drilled and tapped with NPT connections for pressure gauges
• Casing shall incorporate integral mounting feet for support and be capable of accepting suction and discharge nozzle loading
• Rotational arrows shall be cast or securely attached to the pump
3.3 Impeller
• Impeller should be spin balanced to ISO 1940 Grade 6.3 criteria [Ref. 7.5].
• Impeller: 8.56” Dia.
3.4 Shaft
• The shaft should be solid with the deflection limited to a maximum of 0.002" at the face of the mechanical seal when subjected to the maximum dynamic hydraulic loads in the range of operations from shutoff to 120% BEP.
• To be furnished with grounded bearing
3.5 Bearings
• Anti-friction bearings must include an inboard radial bearing and an outboard double thrust bearing designed for minimum L10 life of 17,500 hours at maximum load
• Bearing shall be selected in accordance with ANSI/ABMA-9 [Ref. 7.3] and ANSI/ABMA- 11 [Ref. 7.4] load ratings and fatigue life for ball and roller bearings
• Lubrication method shall be oil bath
• Oil level within the bearing frame shall be monitored by sight glass Grounded bearings
3.6 Seals
The impeller shaft shall be fitted with a mechanical seal design for clean water with 316 stainless steel metal parts and viton O-rings. Crane, Chesterton, and Flowserve type of seals or equivalent are acceptable.
