Are you calling to report a Violation or a Stranding?

Violations

Spec: Violations of the Marine Mammal Protection Act are investigated by NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement. One moment please, while I connect your call to the NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement. (Patch call to NOAA Office of Law Enforcement, 1-800-853-1964.)

California sightings can be reported to: _____________ Is it Alive and entangled? Agent, There is a separate hotline for reporting entangled marine mammals. I am going to transfer you to that answering service. Please be prepared to provide very detailed information such as lat/long, species, approximate size and age class of the animal, weather/seas, visibility, etc. Transfer them to 1-877-767-9425.

It’s Dead on the beach? Spec: Please take photos from a distance and the network will get in touch with you as quickly as possible. Depending on the condition and species of the animal they may want to collect additional information and conduct a necropsy to determine cause of death.

It’s Dead in the water? Spec: If the animal is dead and is floating in the water please take pictures and determine the latitude/longitude if possible. There is little the network can do while an animal is still floating. If it comes ashore we will respond to perform a necropsy if resources are available to do so.

· Seals

Is it Alive and Stranded? Spec: It is normal for seals and seal pups to be on the beach alone for extended periods of time. Please keep your distance and do not disturb, touch, or move them and please keep dogs away and on a leash. All marine mammals are protected by law. Please take photos from a distance and the network will get in touch with you if they need more information. If this animal has already been reported there is a chance you may not get a call back.

Is it Dead on the beach? Spec: Due to limited resources we are unable to collect or respond to every dead marine mammal. Photos are very helpful for determining species and condition of the carcass. Your local network will get in touch with you to get more information about the stranding and will determine if a response is necessary. They will also give you carcass disposal options if they are not available to respond.

· Sea Lions

Is it Alive and on the beach? Spec: Sea lions use shoreline habitat to rest and regulate their body temperature. Please keep your distance and do not disturb, touch, or move them and please keep dogs away and on a leash. All marine mammals are protected by law.
