About this file
This request for information document relates to solicitation number 140P8523R0019 from the Department of the Interior National Park Service to replace pumps and motors at Marin Headlands. The specification requires installing one of the two new pumps and operating it for 24 hours before replacing the other pump and check valve. It provides details on installing the check valves between the new pumps and existing pipes, which may require special flanges. Pictures from a similar past project using a special flange to adapt a smaller check valve to a larger pipe size are attached as a suggestion. The contractor must submit its proposed check valve installation method for approval before installation.

Question: Does the NPS have a certain procedure to install the pumps and motors?
Answer: Yes, Specification 33 32 00 Part 3 Section 3.1.A. describes the installation procedure. It is expected that one of the two pumps will be installed and operated for 24 hours before replacing the other pump and check valve. The specification also states that the contractor may propose other replacement schedules for approval.
Question: How should the check valves be installed?
Answer: The check valves are specified in Section 33 32 00 of the specifications. The check valves will have to be installed in the space between the new pumps and the existing pipes. This may require special flanges to fit. The pumps and motors were replaced in a similar lift station last year, and the contractor that completed that work used a special flange to adapt a 4-inch ball check to a 6-inch valve in a short space. The pictures of what was used last year is attached as a suggestion for what can be done, but this is not the required method. As stated in the specifications, the contractor must submit their proposed method for fitting the valve for approval before installing the components.
