C. Metal Shake Roof Supply Specifications

Background: NPS will replace the cedar shake roof on House #40 (Superintendent's Residence – Historic

Structure LCS 21150), which has met its life cycle. The wood shakes on the Superintendent's Residence are weathered and need to be replaced to protect the integrity of the structure and have reached the end of their Life cycle. This project consists of removing, with NPS staff, the existing cedar shake roofing system on Historic

House #40 and replacing it with a fire-resistant metal shake roofing system designed to replicate the historic appearance of the existing cedar shake roof.

Fire-resistant metal shake roofing panels designed to replicate the appearance, texture, profile, and color of historic cedar shake are the preferred choice of material to be used.

As per the manufacturer’s specifications, to achieve a Class A fire-rated roof assembly.

The ASTM E108 Class A roof covering assembly is the highest fire-resistance rating for roofing systems in the

United States. It is defined by standardized fire tests that assess how the entire roof assembly—deck, insulation, underlayment, and roof covering—performs under severe fire exposure. Class A roof assemblies are effective against severe fire test exposures, providing limited flame spread and low contribution to fuel load under test conditions. They are suitable for a wide range of roof coverings, including asphalt shingles, metal, tile, and membrane systems, when paired with appropriate substrates and accessories in an approved assembly.

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) Certified Metal Roofing Program was developed to recognize metal roofing manufacturers who adhere to exacting quality control procedures, as well as products that utilize metals and coatings that meet high-performance standards.

Examples of acceptable systems include:

1. Classic Metal Roofing Systems – Rustic Shake / Country Manor Shake aluminum shake systems designed to replicate wood shake appearance and tested for Class A fire resistance.

2. EDCO Products – Arrowline Shake steel shake roofing panels with integrated interlocking design and Class A fire rating or similar.

3. Decra Roofing Systems – Shake XD stone-coated steel roofing panels that replicate cedar shake texture and profile or similar.

4. Boral Steel – Pine-Crest Shake stone-coated steel roofing system with Class A fire rating.

5. Interlock Roofing – Cedar Shake Aluminum Roofing System, designed to simulate traditional cedar shake roofing while providing long-term durability and fire resistance.

6. Equivalent systems meeting the following requirements may also be considered:

• ASTM E108 Class A fire-rated roofing assembly

• Metal shake panels that replicate historic cedar shake appearance, profile, and exposure

• Manufacturer system including compatible trim, flashing, ridge caps, and fastening components

• Minimum 40–50 years expected service life
