Questions and Clarifications Notes taken by Timothy Babalis
Is water available at the site?
Answer: There is a local well at the project site, but it does not provide adequate supply for project dust control and compaction. An adequate water supply is available from a hydrant located at the Chaparral Area, approximately four miles away at the end of the park entrance road per Section 02332, Part 2.1 of the specifications.
Will road and parking closures be allowed?
Answer: Yes, per Section 01010, Part 3.2 of the specifications, the Visitor Center parking area, and the Maintenance & Housing areas may be closed to all traffic and vehicles Monday – Thursday, 7:00AM to 5:30PM.
NPS Housing residents will need access restored each evening after the workday ends. The NPS Contracting Officer Representative (COR) and Project Inspector will handle coordination with staff and residents. The NPS also can move items such as garbage dumpsters and ground squirrel barriers from resident parking stalls to facilitate the project work.
The main road must remain open, and when work occurs at the Entrance Station and culvert installation site, one lane of the main road may be closed at a time.
What are the weed control requirements?
Answer: Per Section 01010, Part 3.6, all equipment to be used in the National Park must be cleaned of weed seeds and dirt and inspected prior to entering the Park.
Will there be opportunities to reuse excavated aggregate?
Answer: Some excavated aggregate can be reused on the project per Section 02725, Part 2.1.A, and Part 3, Aggregate Base Course and Section 02320, Part 2.2.A Culvert Bedding & Backfill. Excess excavated aggregate not reused at the end of the Contract, shall be hauled and stockpiled at the Jawbone Parking Area, approximately 3-1/2 miles away on the park entrance road.
Where can aggregate be stockpiled?
Answer: Excavated aggregate and soil may be temporarily stockpiled in any of the work areas, including on the already paved portions of the Visitor Center and Maintenance Yard parking areas. At the end of the contract, any unused aggregate must be hauled to stockpile at the Jawbone Parking area as specified in the previous answer.
Equipment and materials staging must be confined to the project work areas.
Plastic Board edging in Visitor Center & Maintenance Parking areas?
Answer: Leave the board edging in place while carefully excavating the three-inch depth of existing aggregate inside the parking areas. Use the edge boards to control the areas to be paved and finish grades.
Attachment No. 09
Cleaning of Drains?
Answer: Per Section 02612, Part 3.E - Clean debris from trench drains, and two drop inlet grates and boxes. No need to flush culverts.
Will compaction of Aggregate Base be tested?
Answer: Section 02320, Part 3.4.B Culvert Trenching and Backfilling and Section 02725, Part 3.8.A require 95% relative density compaction be achieved.
Entrance Road Culvert work?
Answer: Note the specification Section 02612, Part 2.1 specifies Aluminized Steel, Type 2 culvert pipe and end sections. Also note that there are underground utilities located in the path of the new culvert (sewer, water, electricity, and phone). NPS has as-built drawings of these utilities, and all have tracer wires on the lines. NPS will work with contractor to locate all utilities. It is likely the new culvert will be installed under the existing utility lines.
The Site Visit concluded at 11:00AM.
