Boardwalk Replacement – INDU Questions and Answers listed below:

QUESTIONS:

Question

Question Answer/Response

1.

The bid form does not have an item to install the new plastic decking for the 693’ of new decking

Line Item No 7 has been relabeled to say Install new boardwalk instead of Install New Floating Decking.

2.

Specification section 011000- 1.2.B states that handrails shall be included for the first 352 LF.

Is there a detail for the handrail.

Hand rail details to follow ADA/ABA requirements, to be provided by the manufacturer. Use Superdeck or equal product.

3.

Is there a color for the new plastic decking.

Match existing decking color.

4.

Will the new plastic decking be installed to the existing frame/structure. Is there a detail for this.

No, contractor shall provide all components. No existing components shall be used.

5.

Is there a detail showing how many bolts are installed with each 3.5’ long deck piece. (size, type of material, etc.)

Bolts amount as per manufacturer specifications/installation instructions.

6.

Is there a width, and thickness for the new plastic decking boards.

See drawings sheets C04-C07 for width dimensions.

Thickness as per Superdeck or equal manufacturer specifications.

7.

Can you provide additional information as to what type of plastic decking is required.

Use Superdeck or equal product.

8.

The bid form has an item for tree removal. Can you clarify where these are located on the drawings.

Trees or vegetation removal will be done by NPS staff.

This line item will be and has been removed from the Bid Schedule.

Please see the Revised Bid Schedule for referencing and this must be the one completed when submitting the final proposal.

9.

The specs do not clearly discuss installing of new fencing – what is this referring to and what are the specifications for this fence.

(type of fence, size requirements, length, etc…)

All specifications related to the new fence like (type of fence, size requirements, length) appears on the drawing sheet C08.

10.

Tree removal is mentioned in the bid scheduled, what are the types of trees, how many trees, size of the trees, etc.

Trees or vegetation removal will be done by NPS staff.

This line item will be and has been removed from the Bid Schedule.

Please see the Revised Bid Schedule for referencing and this must be the one completed when submitting the final proposal.

11.

Can the boardwalk be placed on a ground level pile system using our Structural fiber Composite piles? Or is there no opportunity to do so? If we were to place it on a simple pile system, we can better control the settling parts that you see with the existing system. If it is not an option, then we can provide long sections to try and maintain a level walkway.

The instability of the soil and the installation of piles can cause instability or damage the natural resources of this area. A piling system will not be accepted as an option.

12.

Floating Sections: can this be a pile system also? It can save a bit of money by eliminating floats, hinge systems, hold downs, and seats. Railings can be a challenge with these also.

See answer no. 11

13. We can provide floating structures.

I would like for our materials to be considered as an approved equal so I can provide material quotes to the bidding contractors.

Product/Material Mfg requesting: Wagners Composite Fiber Technologies

Wagner did not provided adequate specifications to compare the existing decking to determine if the product can be used as an approved equal.

Based on the information provided it look that this product required a structural frame and columns penetrations.

The “Superdeck” product required for this project does not use any structural frame or ground penetration. The superdeck is made out of plastic and will be layout over the ground except for the sections in the water that will require floats.

This particular trail contains high sensible vegetation and minimum disturbances were approved to meet the NEPA and 106 compliances. The project was approved with restrictions in having minimal or no ground disturbances and penetration. Because the Superdeck product is made out of plastic and due to its density, it does not submerge in marshy terrain.

14.

This is a question in regards to the handrail requirement in the specs.

Handrails shall be included for the first 352 lf until the end of the floating boardwalk and around the new platform.

What material type is the handrail?

What is the mounting requirements?

Will the handrail be on both sides?

Will a detail be provided in the plans?

1. Handrails material: aluminum

2. Mounting per manufacturer specifications.

3. Provide handrails on both sides of the boardwalk. (Only Floating areas)

4. Contractor shall provide handrail detail per manufacturer specifications to meet ADA/ABA requirements.

15.

Lumberock has a requested a substitution from what is listed in the specifications. Please advise if this material is acceptable.

Lumberock did not provided adequate specifications to compare the existing decking to determine if the product can be used as an approved equal.

Based on www.lumberock.com website it look that this product required a structural frame and columns penetrations.

Please see Answer No. 13.
