About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding drawings for a water system rehabilitation project at a National Park Service site in the Midwest Region. The project will abandon an existing well and drill a new well to 160 feet, with the steel casing and grout extending to 145 feet below ground surface. Clearing will be required around the new well and piping. Boring pits will be used to install fittings where piping turns or intersects. The well design is based on anticipated water-bearing strata at the planned depth, though this is an estimate based on observed site conditions. The scope of work is to replace the existing well with a new construction.

Questions/Answers

1. Drawing C8 – Please define what boxes represent at points where piping turns or where it intersects?

Since the water piping is bored, the design anticipates boring pits so that fittings can be installed.

2. Please state whether clearing will be approved in the vicinity of the new well and the underground piping to the well?

Park staff will perform required vegetative clearing to install the new well.

3. Drawing C12 – Detail 1 indicates that the Steel Casing and Grout extends to 145’ bgs and well borehole extends to 160’ bgs. Please confirm that the well design is based on groundwater entering the well only from 145’ to 160’? This seems like a very short interval to achieve the desired production.

The well design is based on the existing well depth. We anticipate the water bearing strata at that depth, but it is an estimate based on observed conditions.

4. Drawing C12 – Well detail indicates that this is for modification of an existing well. Please clarify whether this is the detail of the new well or an existing well?

The scope is to abandon the existing well and drill a new well. The detail is for the new well.
