Steamtown National Historic Site relies on coal to maintain its steam operations and preserve the authenticity of historic locomotiv es. Coal is essential for powering the locomotive, ensuring accurate demonstrations of steam-powered railroading and interpretation. This fuel allows Steamtown to provide immersive, hands-on experiences that educate the public about the history of steam engines and the industrial era. By regularly purchasing coal, Steamtown not only keeps these historic machines operational but also safeguards their long-term preservation. Additionally, the use of coal supports educational programs and upholds the site's role in showcasing one of America's most iconic technologies.
