Scope of Work Move 11 Artillery Pieces
1.0 Introduction
Colonial National Historical Park (COLO) located in Yorktown, Virginia, has 11 artillery pieces within its museum collection. These pieces are currently mounted to a wall on display in Surrender Field. This includes cannons, howitzers, and a mortar. These pieces weigh approximately 1684 lbs. for the smallest and 1728-2400 lbs. for the larger ones. These items are scheduled for long overdue conservation and preservation treatment that requires movement from exhibit to a treatment area. Once treatment is complete, the pieces will need to be returned to exhibit approximately 6 weeks later.
2.0 Scope
The contractor shall provide all materials, tools, equipment, and labor needed to unmount, transport, and remount the pieces.
3.0 Requirements
The contractor must be experienced in art and artifact handling, crating, and moving of large museum objects. This experience must include proper rigging and protection of artifacts.
The objects are currently mounted to a wall outside behind a railing. They will need to be unmounted.
Objects must be secured in transit in a way that will ensure minimal movement with proper cushioning. Objects must not be allowed to directly rub on each other during transit.
Objects are to be delivered to a workshop approximately 2.5 miles away from Surrender field.
Approximately six weeks from the move, the objects will need to be moved back to their original location and mounted.
Move plan will be submitted to the Conservator ahead of the move.
The contractor must provide proof of insurance.
4.0 Performance
Work will be performed at Surrender Field and the Cannon workshop. Any prefabrication of needed supports or pallets may be done at the contractor’s facility ahead of time if necessary.
