DESCRIPTION:
Large reproduction oil painting of younger William Fitzhugh. Fitzhugh is outside with a sunset behind him, wearing a blue suit and holding a pair of gloves in one hand. Eye injury is evident. Original artist was Hesselius, reproduction artist was Gregory Stapko. Wood frame. Back of canvas has written on it “Copy by Stapko from original.”

William Fitzhugh Color Drawing Cat #FRSP-3052, Acc #FRSP-00377
Color drawing of William Fitzhugh in gold gilt frame. Glass has air bubble. Fitzhugh is drawn in profile because he is supposed to have suffered an eye injury to his right eye. Artist and age of drawing are unknown. On back of frame is pasted newspaper dated Monday, June __, 1846, Philadelphia.

James Horace Lacy Portrait Cat #FRSP-3403, Acc #FRSP-00396)
Oil on canvas half portrait of James Horace Lacy. Portrait size, 24 3/4" wide x 24 1/4" long. Plain brownish background, Lacy is wearing a black suit, white shirt, holding a red book in the lower left corner. Frame is of gold leaf floral design - scratches.

Devore Painting Cat #FRSP-5494, Acc #FRSP-00198
Oil on canvas painting of Brigadier General Daniel B. Devore, a former owner of Chatham. The portrait is behind glass in a high-quality gilt frame and is currently in excellent condition. The painting was executed by Clarence R. Mattei (1882-1945) in 1945.
MEASUREMENTS: 61.0 x 75.0 cm.
George Washington Portrait Cat #FRSP-3048, Acc # FRSP-00377
This painting of George Washington was painted by an unknown artist. The artwork was donated by the Pratt Estate. The painting was determined to be as old as early 19th century by Mr. Marion Mecklenburg, a Washington art conservator. He added that the entire painting, except for the face, has been retouched with heavy oils. The person who retouched the painting is also unknown. There is a small hole in the painting on the right side of the canvas.

Elopement of Helen Painting Cat #FRSP-5961, Acc #FRSP-00608
"The Elopement of Helen", classical painting. Once hung in Chatham's parlor early in the 20th century. Inscription on back identifies it as 1855 copy of a Guldo Reni painting on display at Louvre in Paris. The copyists signature, W. Goulet, is barely visible in lower right corner.

This oil painting is of Churchill Jones, a former owner of Chatham. In the portrait, Jones is seated in a red chair and holding a book in his left hand. Jones is wearing a black jacket. This portrait was willed to the park by Mrs. Ellen Tootle Lacy, a granddaughter of J. Horace Lacy.

William Jones Painting Cat #FRSP-5868, Acc #FRSP-00580
This painting, in its gold frame, was painted in 1825 by John Wesley Jarvis. It shows William Jones in a half-length pose (waist up). Jones is shown with a stern look on his face and pressed lips. He is seated in a green draped chair, and wearing a dark brown jacket and a white shirt with a ruffled collar.
This portrait was willed to the park by Mrs. Ellen Tootle Lacy, a granddaughter of J. Horace Lacy.

This portrait shows an unidentified man who may be either the father (William Lacy) or grandfather (Drury Lacy) of J. Horace Lacy. The man is seated in a wooden arm chair and holding a red book in his left hand. He is wearing a black suit. He has dark hair on the sides and balding on the top. This portrait was willed to the park by Mrs. Ellen Tootle Lacy, a granddaughter of J. Horace Lacy.

Betty Churchill Jones Lacy Painting Cat# FRSP-5870, Acc #FRSP-00580
This is an oil painting of Betty as a child. She is wearing a red dress, white pantaloons, and holding a wide brim hat. She is standing in front of a landscape scene. This portrait was willed to the park by Mrs. Ellen Tootle Lacy, a granddaughter of J. Horace Lacy.

Walnut Secretary Cat #FRSP-5873, Acc #FRSP-00580
The secretary has a separate cabinet with glass doors and a brass key. The upper drawer folds out into a writing table with a small drawer and slots. This piece was supposedly at Chatham. There is a tag nailed to the top with “W.E. Lang, 827 Main St. F’bg, Va.” This piece was willed to the park by Mrs.
Ellen Tootle Lacy, a granddaughter of J. Horace Lacy.

Dresser Cat #FRSP-3838, Acc #FRSP-00417
This three tier dresser is made of solid walnut. This dresser was received from Margaret Lacy on September 17, 1979. The mirror has a rectangular shape and is mounted on two swivels. The top tier has three small drawers, two with wooden knobs and one with a keyhole. The middle tier has one big drawer with a keyhole. The bottom tier has three large drawers each with two wooden knobs. The center drawer has a keyhole.
MEASUREMENTS:
Top tier - L 88.9, H 12.7, W 26.7 cm. - adjustable mirror with stand fastened on top by two screws.
Middle: L 110.2, H 17.1, W 48.3 cm.
Bottom: L 97.8, H 66.0, W 45.7 cm.
Washington Chair Cat #FRSP-5875, Acc #FRSP-00580
This high back chair made of black oil cloth (?). This chair is referred to as the “Washington Chair.”
There is a large silver plaque on the back stating the history of the chair. The plaque was probably placed there by Graham Gordon Lacy, Sr. It states that George Washington, James Monroe, James Madison, Lee, Washington Irving, Marshall and Byrd sat in the chair at various times. This piece was willed to the park by Mrs. Ellen Tootle Lacy, a granddaughter of J. Horace Lacy.

Fitzhugh Chair Cat #FRSP-18753, Acc #FRSP-00917
Wing chair, converted to necessary chair. The chair has additional stretcher bars added so that a board can be set in with a hole in it for the purpose of placing a chamber pot in the hole. The remainder of the original webbing for the seat foundation still remains on the side rails of the chair. All of the inside padding remains except for any that would have covered the seat base. None of the padding exists from the outside lower areas of the chair because of the need to remove them when upholstering the chair.

Sofa Cat #FRSP-5878, Acc #FRSP-00580
This sofa has wood trim and a fluted back. The material on the back has a raised teal design on a gold background. The seat and arms have a raised gold design with a teal background. The sofa was supposedly an original Chatham piece. This piece was willed to the park by Mrs. Ellen Tootle Lacy, a granddaughter of J. Horace Lacy.

One of a pair of walnut side chairs, circa 1860, with black needlepoint seats, carved flowers on back of chairs. Belonged to Lacy Family of Chatham and Ellwood.

Jackson Death Bed Cat #FRSP-1767, Acc #FRSP-00139 Death bed of Stonewall Jackson. Four poster rope bed, square side rails, no footboard, single plank headboard, four turned posts ending in acorn design. Side rails have been altered for use with box springs or do not belong with bedstead.

MacMurdo, his headquarters.

Litter Cat #FRSP-1773, Acc #FRSP-00139 Litter or spring seat, part of the ambulance in which Jackson rose from the Chancellorsville Battlefield on May 2. Leather covered with scroll ends (added later); covering is split in many places.
