Question 1 What are the cross-sectional dimensions for these boards? Are the 2 x 2.5 and 2 x 4 dimensions nominal or actual?
Answer: The dimensions listed in the Scope of Work are finished (net) dimensions, not nominal lumber sizes. The Government is not requesting commodity nominal 2x material.
1. ITEM NO. 00010 – “2 x 2.5” Purpleheart Bench Slats (2,400 pcs):
Finished (net) size is approximately 1-1/8" thick x 2-3/8" wide, fully milled to the required profile.
1. ITEM NO. 00020 – “2 x 4” Purpleheart Bench Slats (400 pcs):
Finished (net) size is approximately 1-1/8" thick x 3-1/2" wide, fully milled to the required profile.
All dimensions are measured after surfacing, profiling, and edge treatment, as shown on the attached Bench Slats – Purpleheart REV 4 drawing.
Question 2 Do the end users want net 2" thick boards, or is nominal 2" (net 1.5") acceptable?
Answer: The Government does not require a full 2" net thickness. The required thickness for both items is the finished net thickness shown on the attached drawing, approximately 1-1/8".
Any additional lead time associated with producing full 2" net material is not applicable to this requirement.
Question 3 Are 2 x 2.5, 6' length and 2 x 4, 6' length the finished sizes the customer is requesting?
Answer: Yes. The stated dimensions represent the finished, fully milled sizes.
1. All slats shall be Precision End Trimmed (PET) to 6'-0" ± 1/32".
1. Ends shall be clean, square, and ready for installation without additional cutting.
Question 4 For ITEM NO. 00010 (“2 x 2.5”), is the required size 2" x 2.5" or 1.5" x 2.5"?
Answer: Neither nominal size applies. ITEM NO. 00010 requires a finished, profiled slat approximately 1-1/8" thick x 2-3/8" wide, per the attached drawing and Scope of Work.
Commodity nominal lumber (e.g., 1.5" x 2.5" or 1.5" x 2.0") does not meet the Government’s requirement.
Question 5 For ITEM NO. 00020 (“2 x 4”), is the required size 2" x 4" or 1.5" x 3.5"?
Answer: Neither nominal size applies. ITEM NO. 00020 requires a finished, profiled slat approximately 1-1/8" thick x 3-1/2" wide, per the attached drawing and Scope of Work.
Question 6 If a full 2" thickness were required, would glued-up material be acceptable?
Answer: A full 2" net thickness is not required for this solicitation. Therefore, the use of glued-up laminations to achieve a 2" thickness is not applicable.
For clarity:
1. The Government requires solid Purpleheart hardwood slats milled from single pieces.
1. Glued-up, laminated, or edge-bonded assemblies are not acceptable.
1. Contractors may select appropriate rough stock as needed to achieve the finished profile, but the final product must be a single, solid hardwood slat.
This requirement is driven by historic bench construction, durability in exterior conditions, and visual consistency with existing benches.
