Data Collection Instructions - Structural Fire Inventory January 18, 2018 See attached spreadsheets. On the first tab is a location summary with the Park/FMSS #/Description/Sq. Ft., and fields for the systems in place at the location. There are a number of tabs, each corresponding to a different system.

Systems: The anticipated systems for the Kenai Fjords Visitor Center will be:

Emergency Lighting Fire Alarm Signaling System Smoke Alarm System Portable Fire Extinguishers Fire Sprinkler System Fire Doors

Photos: It is imperative that photos be captured that are correlated to the data collected.

· Capture a photo of the front of the location, with a building number or street number visible if possible.

· Capture a photo of individual elements of the structural fire systems as described elsewhere in this document.

Instructions for individual systems:

At the bottom of each tab there is a shaded area with the list of options shown for each drop-down menu found on that tab. For example, all of the different types of fire extinguishers are listed, so that if these are printed, those options are visible that would typically just be accessible on the spreadsheet.

Emergency Lighting

1) Choose the type of emergency lighting fixture from the drop-down menu. Note the quantity of each type of emergency lighting fixture.

2) Take one clear photo of each type of fixture. Annotate the photo indicating the room number where it was taken.

Fire Alarm Signaling System

1) Note whether it is a conventional system or addressable if known. If not, we can determine it from photos and the model number of the panel.

2) Fill out the system information on the spreadsheet. Things such as the networking of panels and whether the panel performs other actions like fan shutdown are going to apply in bigger buildings and systems.

3) Note whether the system is monitored outside of the building. This can be determined by whether or not it calls anyone when in alarm, and whether it calls a commercial service like Guardian, or a government entity such as NPS or a local fire/police dispatch.

4) Take photos of the fire alarm panel, and one clear photo of each unique type of device in the system (smoke detector/heat detector/pull station, horn/strobe).

5) Fill out the device information and quantities. For detectors, there are rarely visible markings, and removing them from the base can set a trouble in the system, so the manufacturer and model information may not be obtainable, unless someone familiar with the system knows what type of devices are in use.

Smoke Alarm System

1) There will most likely be either 120V hardwired smoke alarms with 9V backup batteries, 9V-only units, or a combination of each. Remove each smoke alarm to verify what type it is. Note the manufacturer and model for each smoke alarm (typically on the back). Common manufacturers are Kidde and FireX.

2) Take one clear photo of the front and back of each unique type of smoke alarm. If all the smoke alarms are the same model, you will capture a total of two pictures: one of the front, one of the back. Make a note if any of the smoke alarms are battery-only mounted over a 120V location, or if there are 120V alarms installed but not connected.

Fire Extinguishers

1) Complete the data entry on the form.

2) Take a single photo each type of fire extinguisher (most likely will be just Dry Chemical units). Note what type of fire extinguishers are present, and the quantity of each type. This inventory is for NPS-maintained fire extinguishers, so small, disposable extinguishers kept as supplementary devices are not included. Privately-owned fire extinguishers are sometimes found in NPS housing units.

Fire Sprinkler System

1) Complete data entry using the drop-down choices in the spreadsheet

2) Capture a photo of each component of the sprinkler system. Where there are multiple of the same type of component (example: pendant sprinkler heads), only photograph one representative example of the component.

3) Capture a photo of the external alarm bell.

4) Capture an overview photo of the entire sprinkler tree.

5) Capture a close-up photo of the design placard (if present).

6) In addition to the general photo of each component, capture a photo of the name plate on each component that has a name plate.

7) It is imperative that the photographs be annotated so NPS can correlate them to each unique component in the NPS database.

Structural Egress Doors

1) Capture data for each door that is part of a rated assembly.

2) Capture a photo of each side of the door, a photo of the egress hardware, and the fire rating label on the door.

File details come from the government source that posted it.
