Amendment 002

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

INTERMOUNTAIN REGION

May 5, 2021

1) Other Attachments – Posted via Amendment 001 are the Pre-Bid Sign-in Sheet, GRCA

Pruning Guidelines, and project Submittal Register.

2) Attachments included in this amendment –

i. 2021 Desert View Tank Report w/ Pictures

ii. Texas-Aquastore Exterior Platform Kit

3) Contractor Representative – Contractor may elect to have one representative onsite to cover multiple roles (safety, superintendent, quality control, environmental manager/coordinator).

4) Tank Information

a. Tank Manufacturer Contact Information:

i. Wick Baker, 602-620-2206, wick@bordermarketing.com

iii. Chad Callahan (technical), 903-870-5000 / 903-624-2805, chad@texas-aquastore.com

b. Tank was installed in 2000s. There is no lead-based paint.

c. Tank is typically one-half to three-quarters full.

d. Tank is required to remain in service during the work.

e. There are two existing sacrificial anodes inside the tank, believed to be magnesium. Refer to page 104 of the specifications, line 62 of the “Tank Parts

List” (bill of materials).

f. Tank access is through the top of the tank via the roof hatch.

5) Construction Water

a. Non-potable water is available at Grand Canyon Village.

b. Potable water is available at the Desert View location.

6) Vegetation Removal – Some tree pruning may be necessary when relocating the ladder.

Reference photo on Drawing C3. Follow the attached GRCA Pruning Guidelines. Tree removal is not permitted.

7) Sediment Removal –

a. When vacuuming the sediment out of the tank: properly store, remove, and dispose offsite at an approved landfill location. Contractor is not permitted to dispose sediment at the Park.

b. Estimated sediment depth less than one (1) inch. Refer to inspection report.

Volume can be determined using a tank diameter of forty (40) feet.

c. It is unknown if sediment removal has been done prior to this scope.

8) Exterior Seams Re-Sealing

a. Sealant Product Manus Sealer No. 98 may be discontinued; the newer product is

Manus 75 A-M. An equal single component urethane sealer product may be submitted for approval, or as recommended by the Manufacturer.

mailto:wick@bordermarketing.com mailto:jp@texas-aquastore.com mailto:chad@texas-aquastore.com mailto:chad@texas-aquastore.com

b. For estimated seam lengths, dimensions shown on drawing C2 are taken from the original shop drawings (see specification PDF pages 87-140). Roof panel seams can be estimated from the original shop drawings, p 112, 116, and 135 show the roof panel layout

9) Specifications Not Applicable to This Project

a. Specification 01 50 00 3.2.A.2 – Temporary water system.

b. Specification 01 50 00 3.2.B – Effluent Removal.

c. Specification 33 13 02 1.1.A – Installing a new interior ladder and re-sealing interior tank seams.

d. Page 141 of Specification Package, “Glass-Fused-to-Steel Bolted Water Tank, Tank Maintenance Repair”

i. This is a specification from the manufacturer is intended to show materials used for repair and maintenance. DISREGARD 1.1 “Scope of Work” on this document. However, Contractor is responsible for replacing bolt caps

(nuts) as necessary because of improvements shown on the drawings, such as ladder relocation, platform fastening, railing attachments, etc.

10) Fastening Accessories to the Tank

a. Texas-Aquastore has a standard manway platform kit that can be used in conjunction with the drawing in this project (reference attachment). It is recommended that personnel do not step on or over the roof access hatch. GRCA would be amenable to this smaller platform footprint as long as the intent of the project is met, and OSHA guidelines are followed.

b. Manufacturer recommends replacing existing tank bolts with correct length bolts on the brackets that attached to the tank wall and with the appropriate seals for mounting ladders, platform, and railings. Drilling new holes on panels is not permitted.

11) Permits – ADEQ permitting is not required for the scope of this project.

Standard Method of Evaluating Degree of Rusting on

Painted Steel Surfaces – SSPC-Vis 2-82 & ASTM D 610-85 The graphical representations show examples of area percentages, which may be helpful in rust grading. The use of photographical reference standards requires the following precautions:

Some finishes are stained by rust. This staining must not be confused with the actual rusting involved.

Accumulated dirt or other material may make accurate determination of the degree of rusting difficult.

Certain types of deposited dirt that contain iron or iron compounds may cause surface discoloration that should not be mistaken for corrosion.

It must be realized that failure may vary over a given area and discretion must therefore be used in applying these reference standards.

In evaluating surfaces, consideration shall be given to the color of the finish coating, since failures will be more apparent on a finish that shows color contrast with rust, such as white, than on a similar color, such as iron oxide finish.

The photographic reference standards are not required for use of the rust-grade scale since the scale is based upon the percent of the area rusted and any method of assessing area rusted may be used to determine the rust grade.
