About this file
This is a specification document for an all-wood buck fence system, a portable, heavy-duty fencing solution constructed from fully peeled round wood poles. The fence uses paired, crossed buck poles (jack legs) forming an angled "X" configuration to support three horizontal rails on the front and one diagonal crossmember brace on the back for stability. The system requires 285 buck pairs, each measuring 5½ feet in finished height, constructed from 6–7 foot peeled round wood poles with 5–8 inch diameter at the base (minimum 5 inches), using species such as lodgepole pine, aspen, or cedar. Buck bases splay outward 3–4 feet at ground level for wide footprint and tip resistance. Rails are attached at approximately 17, 30, and 42 inches from the ground, with the bottom rail positioned 16–18 inches above ground to deter small animals.
The specification requires 947 horizontal poles (12 feet long, minimum 5½ inch diameter) and 2,179 total fasteners consisting of 1,232 #17 CTX 6" T40 construction lag screws (primary fasteners for rail attachment) and 947 #17 CTX 8" T40 screws (for deeper penetration in diagonal braces and reinforced connections). All fasteners feature T40 star drive capability, heat-treated hardened steel, triple-layer ACQ-compatible bronze coating, and aggressive knurled threads with Type 17 tips. All wood materials must be sound, straight, free of major defects, and fully peeled to resist rot and insects. The system is fully portable, requiring only basic tools such as impact drivers and saws for installation, with maximum spacing between buck pairs set at 12 feet to match rail length. No substitutions of materials or fasteners are permitted without prior written Contracting Officer approval. Wood poles must withstand livestock and wildland pressure without failure when completed.

All-Wood Buck Fence Specifications
General Description This specification is for a portable, heavy-duty all-wood buck fence system (also known as jackleg fence, buck and pole fence, or cross-buck fence) constructed from peeled round wood poles for upright supports (buck pairs) and horizontal rails. The system uses paired, crossed buck poles forming an angled "X" or bipod support to hold three horizontal rails on the front side and one diagonal crossmember (brace) on the backside for stability and to prevent racking. Assembly is secured using #17 CTX T40 construction lag screws for strong, reliable wood-to-wood connections. The fence is rugged, livestock/wildland-friendly, portable (no post-hole digging required), and suitable for field installation on varied terrain.
Buck Pairs (Jack Legs / Upright Supports)
Quantity: 285 buck pairs required.
Overall finished height: 5½ feet tall (when set in position).
Material: Peeled round wood poles/logs (e.g., lodgepole pine, aspen, cedar, or equivalent straight, sound, naturally durable species).
Diameter: 5–8 inches at the base (minimum 5 inches for structural strength; 6–7 inches typical).
Length per pole: Approximately 6–7 feet (to achieve 5½-foot finished height after crossing and ground contact/settling; adjust for site conditions).
Construction: Two poles per buck pair crossed at an angle (~30–45 degrees) to form a stable long-legged "X." Notch or saddle-cut one pole at the intersection (approximately 4–4.5 feet from the base) to ~1/3 depth for secure interlocking with the mating pole. Bases splay outward (~3–4 feet apart at ground level) for wide footprint and tip resistance.
Support Points: Attachment locations at approximately 17 inches, 30 inches, and 42 inches from the ground (measured to rail centers).
Distance between the bottom of the crossed buck (base area) and the lowest rail support:
Approximately 35 inches (adjustable during setup).
All wood shall be sound, straight, free of major defects (e.g., cracks, rot, large knots compromising strength), and fully peeled (bark and cambium completely removed) to resist rot, insects, and improve longevity/safety.
Poles/Rails (Horizontal Members)
• Quantity: 947 pieces required.
• Diameter: 5½ inches minimum (uniform or naturally tapered; consistent for even rail height).
• Length: 12 feet.
• Material: Peeled round wood poles/rails (same species as bucks for compatibility).
• Attachment: Rails secured to buck support points using #17 CTX T40 construction lag screws (pre-drill if needed to prevent splitting; use aggressive threads for deep penetration and hold).
• Configuration per section: Three horizontal rails on the front side (spaced per buck support points) and one diagonal crossmember/brace on the backside (running from near the top of one buck to near the bottom of the opposite buck for rigidity).
• Spacing: Bottom rail ~16–18 inches above ground (to deter small animals if applicable);
middle and top rails evenly spaced to achieve overall fence height of ~5½ feet.
Fasteners (Hardware)
• #17 CTX 6” T40 Screws: Quantity 1,232 required.
o Use: Primary fasteners for securing rails and crossmembers to buck poles (e.g., through the rail into the buck at each intersection point; typically, 4 screws per rail end × 3 rails per section, with additional for braces).
o Specifications: 17 diameter construction lag screws, 6 inches long, T40 star drive (six-lobe for high torque and reduced cam-out), heat-treated/hardened steel, triple-layer ACQ-compatible bronze coating for exterior corrosion resistance, aggressive knurled threads and Type 17 tip for easy start and minimal splitting in wood.
• #17 CTX 8” T40 Screws: Quantity 947 required.
o Use: For applications requiring deeper penetration (e.g., diagonal braces, thicker intersections, or reinforced connections).
o Specifications: Same as above but 8 inches long for extended reach and stronger hold in structural timber.
• All fasteners shall be driven with a T40 star bit/driver; no substitutions without approval.
Additional Requirements
• All primary materials: 100% wood poles (fully peeled); fasteners limited to specified CTX screws (no other metal components in fence structure).
• The system shall be fully portable, installable with basic tools (e.g., impact driver for screws, saw/axe for minor adjustments).
• Maximum spacing between buck pairs: 12 feet (to match rail length; adjust for terrain or overlap if needed).
• Quality assurance: Wood poles sound and defect-free; screws installed per manufacturer guidelines for load-bearing connections; completed fence sections withstand livestock/wildland pressure without failure.
• Substitutions: No substitutions permitted without prior written approval from the Contracting Officer.
