SECTION 01010

SUMMARY OF WORK

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

1. The work to be accomplished under this contract consists of reroofing the Quarters 5 building, with a roof area measuring approximately 2,000 square feet with asphalt shingles. The building has a 5 on 12 roof slope. This is a two story building with an approximate eave height of 18’.

Note there are 2 metal furnace vents, 4 pvc vents and 2 smaller square vents that need new boots and/or flashing. The 1 large satellite dish can be removed and left off, but a smaller digital antenna needs to be reinstalled.

Six sheets of 4’ x 8’ plywood roof sheathing are required for the project.

Alternate quote item 3 is to remove and replace the existing vinyl siding with new vinyl siding. The existing siding is approximately 3,822 square feet.

Alternate quote item 4 identifies the replacement of the existing gutters, fascia boards, soffit, and downspouts.

2. Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, equipment and incidentals necessary to complete the work in accordance with these specifications.

3. Refer to the pictures of the building in the appendix. The existing roofing and siding materials shall be removed and disposed off site.

4. The estimate quantities of roofing and siding materials required is for information only, and the contractor shall use their own measurements in the ordering of all materials.

1.02 LOCATION AND INSPECTION OF SITE

A. Prospective bidders are encouraged to attend scheduled site visit(s) indicated within the posted solicitation.

1.03 FACILITY OPERATIONS

The Facility will continue operations during the performance of the contract.

The Contractor shall confine their operations to weekdays, Monday thru Friday (holidays excluded), between the hours of

7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (except for Federal Holidays), unless they have prior approval of the Facility Manager.

1.04 SAFETY

The Contractor shall be responsible for compliance with all provisions of Occupational Safety and Health Administration

(OSHA) requirements.

1.05 CLEANUP

A. The Contractor shall clean up and dispose of daily, all rubbish and waste accumulation. Contaminated waste shall be disposed of according to regulations.

B. The Contractor shall, at completion of the project, remove tools and equipment, and leave the premises clean.

C. The Contractor shall run magnets at the work site at the end of each work day, so any stray nails that may be present can be picked up, to prevent vehicle tire damage.

SECTION 01300

SUBMITTALS

1.01 GENERAL

Prior to installation of any item, the Contractor shall submit and receive written approval per the procedures outlined below.

1.02 SUBMITTALS REQUIRED

Prior to the start of work, the Contractor shall submit product literature and information that indicates the furnished products for the project meets specification requirements.

Manufacturer's literature required:

SECTION 07500

ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOFING

PART_1_-_GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. The work of this Section consists of reroofing the building, including flashings, and roofing shingles. The entire roof of the building shall receive new asphalt shingles, felt underlayment, and flashings.

1.02 SUBMITTALS

A. Flashings, felt underlayment, shingles, and fasteners, shall be submitted for approval according to Section

01300.

1.03 MEASUREMENTS

A. The Contractor shall check all measurements at the building site and shall be responsible for the dimensions, fitting, and proper attachment of all items being provided.

PART_2_-_PRODUCTS

2.01 FELT PAPER AND MEMBRANE

A. Felt paper shall be asphalt saturated, weighing not less than 15 pounds per square.

B. Ice dam protection membrane shall be rubberized asphalt integrally bonded to sheet polyethylene, 40 mil thickness, meeting ASTM D1970. Install the membrane from the roof eave to a distance of 4’ along the roof, for all sides.

2.02 SHINGLES

A. Asphalt shingles shall conform to the requirements of

Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Class_A,_Fire_and_Wind_Resistant_Shingles, ASTM D3018, Type 1, with a 30 year warranty. Shingles shall be 36" x

12" and shall weigh a minimum of 225 pounds per square.

B. Shingles shall be laminated overlay tab square butt strip shingles with self-sealing tabs, approx. 5" or 6" exposure.

C. Color of shingles shall be as selected by the Facility

Manager.

2.03 FLASHING/ROOF VENT BOOTS AND FLASHING

A. Drip flashing shall be aluminum conforming to ASTM B 209, alloy 3003, white baked enamel finish, "T" shaped, 0.019" thick.

B. The roof vent boots/flashing shall be properly manufactured and sized for the particular vent.

2.04 FASTENERS

A. Fasteners shall be hot galvanized steel or aluminum sharp-pointed conventional barbed shank roofing nails (11 or 12 gauge) with minimum 3/8" diameter heads in accordance with shingle manufacturer's recommendations.

Nails are to be of sufficient length to penetrate through the existing roof sheathing. Any nails used for fastening or otherwise coming in contact with any portion of the aluminum flashing shall be aluminum or aluminum alloy nails of sufficient length and size for proper completion of the work in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

2.05 PLYWOOD SHEATHING

A. Plywood sheathing shall conform to Product Standard

PS1 “Construction and Industrial Plywood” and applicable standards of the American Plywood Association. Plywood shall have exterior grade glue for the roof sheathing purposes. Plywood shall match existing thickness assumed to be approximately 5/8” to ¾” thick.

PART_3_-_EXECUTION

3.01 ROOFING

A. The Contractor shall remove and dispose of the existing asphalt shingle roof system, including felt underlayment, asphalt shingles, and eave and rake drip flashing. Receipt of disposal shall be submitted to the

Contracting Officer.

Before installation of new shingles and felt underlayment, the existing roof deck shall be clean and dry and free from all protruding nails. A layer of 15 pound felt shall be installed over the entire roof deck.

B. Shingles shall be installed with 2" head lap and approx. 5" or 6" exposure.

3.02 FLASHING

A. Eave drip flashing shall be continuous flashing installed under the felt underlayment along the entire length of the eaves. Each length of eave trim shall be lapped 2" over the preceding length.

B. Rake drip flashing shall be continuous aluminum flashing installed over the felt underlayment from the ridge to the eaves. Each length shall be lapped 2" over the preceding length.

C. Vent/chimney flashing shall be installed around vent pipes per the vent manufacturers recommended installation procedures.

3.03 FASTENERS

A. Fasteners shall be used in strict conformance with manufacturers' recommendations for roofing materials and flashings.

3.04 INSTALLATION

A. Installation of all materials shall be in strict conformance with manufacturer's recommendations and as approved.

B. Do not apply shingles when air temperature is below 50 degrees F.

SECTION 07600

ALTERNATE ITEM - VINYL SIDING AND OTHER MATERIALS

A. Vinyl Siding shall be extruded polyvinyl chloride with a double 4-inch exposure, in minimum lengths of 12 feet, approximately .040 inches thick, and shall comply with the National Bureau of Standards, Voluntary Products Standard

PS-55-72.

B. Siding and trim accessories shall be of the same quality and finish as the vinyl siding. Vinyl channel trim shall be used for door trim and window trim.

C. Fasteners shall be suited for the intended purposes, as recommended by the siding manufacturer for fastening the siding and accessories.

D. Color selection for all components to be used shall be made by the Refuge

Manager.

E. Installation of vinyl siding includes removal and disposal of the existing siding and other materials, and the installation of new Dupont Tyvek or approved equal building paper, along with all the required siding and trim accessories.

F. The approximate area of siding required is 3,822 square feet, and is estimated as indicated below. This is for information only, and the contractor shall use their own measurements in the ordering of all materials.

Front - 60X18 =1080 SF

Rear - 60X18 =1080 SF

Left side - 27w. 18h to eave 24h to peak = 567 SF

Right side - 27w. 18h to eave 24h to peak = 567 SF

Right garage - 24X11= 264 SF

Left garage - 24X11= 264 SF

G. TRIM WORK

1. Fascia or soffit board shall be 1” by 12” minimum, PVC material.

H. GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS

1. Provide aluminum 5” gutter and 2” x 3” aluminum down spouts. Gutters and down spouts shall 0.032” thick.

Appendix: Pictures of the building roof and pictures of the exterior of the building

The roof vents require new boots/flashing.
