About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers file for a roadway project by the US Fish and Wildlife Service at Yosemite. The Q&A addresses specific technical details about a roadway construction project, including confirmation of several key construction specifications: US Fish and Wildlife will handle grading, rock removal, and base rock installation, and will source compaction testing through a local vendor. The project involves asphalt paving with specific requirements, including a prime coat, safety edge installation, and potential use of Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) or an alternative Caltrans Rubberized Hot Mixed Asphalt, Gap Graded (RHMA-G) mix. The project has an available water source near the fire station in Old El Portal for construction needs, with multiple hydrants accessible at the El Portal maintenance facility.

Text version

1. Will grading, rock removal, and aggregate base rock installation be done by others?

US Fish and Wildlife will be handling the base efforts listed above.

1. Will a prime coat be required prior to asphalt paving?

Yes, prime coat is indicated on the Asphalt Pavement Section on Sheet C10.

1. Will compaction testing be done by others, or is it the contractors responsibility?

US Fish and Wildlife will source a local vendor for the compaction testing.

1. Is the safety edge required?

Yes, Safety Edge detail is depicted on Sheet C10.

1. Is there a available water source nearby that can accommodate filling asphalt rollers, and/or a water truck?

Yes, there is an overhead filling spout adjacent to the fire station in Old El Portal. There are also multiple hydrants nearby in the El Portal maintenance facility.

1. Are there more specifications for the SMA (stone mastic asphalt) mix? I have reached out to Multiple asphalt plants, and they have no knowledge of the mix.

If the proposed SMA mix is not readily available in the area, a viable alternative would be Caltrans Rubberized Hot Mixed Asphalt, Gap Graded (RHMA-G). This would still be placed in a 2” lift, as shown on the plans. RHMA-G is a structural surface course that would be suited for this application (with the proposed HFST still applied). RHMA-G specifications can be found in the Caltrans Standard Specifications, Section 39-2.03.
