About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding a solicitation for interpretive exhibit design services at the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The scope of work involves designing four interpretive exhibits with minimal technology requirements and a lifespan of over 10 years. The refuge has an existing image catalog and some audio/video assets, and staff can assist with additional research and content development. The budget is $65,000 allocated between an initial design phase and subsequent fabrication phase, with the option to fully fund just the design phase. Examples of relevant past work should be submitted in addition to the required bid schedule and past performance survey.

Questions RE: Long Island NWR Complex Interpretive Exhibit Design with alternates of Fabrication and Installation

1. In the Interpretive Experience Plan Project Aspirations section, it notes that “Products should include little to no technology,” but the Statement of Work document contradicts this desire. Can you please clarify? Is there a desire to create more analog hands-on exhibits, or a mix of the two, in this contract?

There is a desire to create more analog content. Although we are open to incorporating technology, any exhibits that do so should have minimal maintenance requirements and a lifespan of more than 10+ years (i.e. not become outdated).

2. What assets (photos, videos, audio) do you have to help create the AV exhibits? Is media production expected to be part of the fabrication scope, or do these assets exist? Are most assets owned, or are the rights already granted? Will we need to research and acquire additional assets?

The refuge has an extensive historic image catalog, and limited audio and video assets. The assets currently in Service possession have rights secured by the Service. Additional assets may need to be acquired, but it is anticipated that those additional assets would be minimal. Service staff and volunteers could also be made available to acquire additional photos, videos and/or audio as needed to support AV exhibit development.

3. Does the staff of the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex have the capability to research and write any additional content for the AV exhibits, or should that scope of work be included in our fees?

Service staff and volunteers could be made available to research and write additional content as needed to support AV exhibit development.

4. If this scope is expected to incorporate artifacts/taxidermy, is there an existing collection database with dimensions for these items?

Although the scope could incorporate artifacts, these elements would be minimal (i.e. limited to 1-2 pieces). There is not an existing collections database with dimensions.

5. Is there an established budget? Is the project fully funded?

We currently have $65K allocated for the project, which is divided into step one (design) and step two (fabrication). The Service may elect to fully fund step one with the allocated funds and issue a second solicitation to fund step two with a future additional allocation.

6. Is the scope of design work limited only to the 4 exhibits listed in the interpretive experience document?

Yes

7. Is there a desire to reuse or reproduce the existing technology, or is a technology update anticipated?

Any technology integrated into the design should be minimal and updated to current industry standards, preferably with an anticipated 10+ year lifespan.

8. Besides the Past Performance Survey and Bid Schedule documents, what other materials/documentation should we submit in order to be considered for the project?

Examples of previous work similar in nature to the current project.
