About this file

This is a technical attachment documenting the existing compressed air infrastructure serving the NIST Gaithersburg Campus, specifically the Central Utility Plant (CUP) air compressors and air dryers located in Building 302.

The facility currently operates four Atlas Copco oil-free, rotary screw air compressors rated at 125 psi (8.6 bar) and 60 hertz: two ZR110 fixed-speed units (674 CFM each) and two ZR160 VSD variable-speed units (913 CFM each). Typically, three of the four compressors run simultaneously to meet campus demand, though the original design specified only one ZR110 and one ZR160 VSD operating in tandem with one set on standby. A Gardner Denver air compressor (model HRA20-12, 20HP/460V/3PH) dedicated to the facility is noted as undersized. The facility also operates four ZEKS refrigerated air dryers using R404 refrigerant (model 600HSFW40P), with two typically running at any given time. Future capacity planning should account for a potential 10 to 20 percent increase in demand. For any future compressed air equipment procurement, the Government recommends Ingersoll Rand, Atlas Copco, or approved equivalents as preferred manufacturers.

Attachment I - NIST Building 302 Existing Campus Air Compressor and Air Dryer System

Revised: 12/17/2025 RP Byrd

Below is the basic information for the Central Utility Plant (CUP) Air Compressors and Air Dryers that serve the Gaithersburg Campus.

There are four (4) existing CUP air compressors and four (4) air dryer serving the NIST Gaithersburg campus. There is also a Gardner Denver air compressor (model HRA20-12, Pump No. R70, Serial Number D103691, and wired for 20HP/460V/3PH) dedicated to the CUP facility, that is undersized for the requirement.

Existing Air Compressors:

1. The CUP air compressors are Atlas Copco oil free, rotary screw, 125 psi (8.6 bar), 60 hertz units.

2. Two (2) units are ZR110 fixed speed air compressors.

3. Two (2) units are ZR160 VSD (variable speed) air compressors.

4. The NIST Gaithersburg facility generally operates three (3) of the four (4) air compressors at any given time.

5. The initial design of the system, was for one (1) ZR110 and one (1) ZR160 VSD to operate in tandem, and for one set to be in standby. However, the Central Utility Plant (CUP) has had to run a combination of three (3) compressors to meet the NIST campus demand.

a. Not knowing future demand, we may need to increase the capacity of any future compressed air system by 10 to 20%.

Existing Air Dryers:

1. The four (4) air dryers are refrigerated units (using R404 refrigerant), manufactured by ZEKS.

2. The NIST Gaithersburg facility primarily operates two (2) of the air dryers at any given time.
