About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document (Amendment 0001) for solicitation 1333ND26QNB680277, issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Department of Commerce on June 17, 2026. The document addresses two key technical inquiries regarding a Tunable Low-noise Short Wavelength Visible Coherent Light Source System.
The Q&A clarifies critical specifications for the system design: (1) the 1560 nm seed source linewidth will be narrow-linewidth (< 50 kHz) and may be implemented as an external-cavity diode laser, single-frequency fiber laser, or whispering-gallery mode laser, with this specification directly impacting the ability to meet the 10 MHz output linewidth requirement at 780 nm following the doubling process; and (2) NIST's cooling preference is forced-air cooling rather than liquid cooling, contingent upon forced-air cooling meeting all stated performance requirements, meaning contractors should not plan to include a chiller in the deliverable. This amendment document does not contain pricing terms, response dates, award information, or set-asides.

Questions and Answers Amendment 0001
1333ND26QNB680277
1. Input seed linewidth. What is the linewidth (and type) of the 1560 nm source that will be injected into the amplifier? Since the 780 nm output linewidth is set by the seed through the doubling process, this determines how we meet the ≤10 MHz output spec.
Answer: NIST will be using a narrow linewidth (< 50 kHz) 1560 nm source. This may be an external-cavity diode laser, a single-frequency fiber laser, or a whispering-gallery mode laser.
2. Cooling. Does NIST prefer forced-air cooling or liquid cooling for the unit? If liquid cooling, should we include a chiller in the deliverable, or will one be provided on your end?
Answer: NIST prefers forced-air cooling, provided that the performance requirements will be met with forced-air cooling.
