About this file

This document contains the Response to Questions for Solicitation Number 1333ND24QNB130376 issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Chemical Sciences Division for a custom designed borosilicate vacuum extraction line. The system is required to enable researchers to acidify a sample of seawater, extract and purify the carbon dioxide, and quantitatively measure the amount. Key details include:

The vacuum extraction line must consist of four modular units on the frontside with a mirrored but non-modular rear vacuum line. The first section is an acidification module/sample introduction system, followed by sections for gas purification using low-temperature traps, and a final sample collection module. The system must include specific components such as Pirani pressure gauges and a diffusion pump. The document provides preliminary schematics and notes that design changes may be warranted in some cases. Overall, the solicitation is seeking scientific glass blowing services to fabricate this custom vacuum extraction system in support of NIST's ocean carbon metrology and greenhouse gas measurement capabilities.

1333ND24QNB130376 FOR SEAWATER CO2 SYSTEM

Response to Questions

Question Response 1 The documentation states that the system will, “Using a roughing and oil diffusion pump the system will be evacuated to <5 x 10-6 Pa.” We’ve converted Pa to torr as 3.7x10-8torr. Upon researching the Pirani Gauges and rough pumps we’ve found that the Pirani Gauges won’t pump down that low and it would be difficult to hold that pressure with the rough pump.

May we get clarification of what pressure the system will be used at?

Using a roughing and oil diffusion pump the system will be evacuated to 1 - 2 mTorr
