About this file
This document appears to be a technical drawing and wiring diagram for the replacement of the Public Address (PA) amplifiers on the NOAA Ship Oscar Elton Sette. The drawing shows the existing system configuration and the updated configuration using dual-channel amplifiers in a primary and backup arrangement. Key details include:
The original PA system had a single 250-watt amplifier for the main speakers and a 60-watt amplifier for the talk-back speakers. The new configuration uses two dual-channel amplifiers, with the A channel powering the main speakers and the B channel powering the talk-back speakers. Selection switches allow toggling between the primary and backup amplifiers. The existing cooling system was also updated, replacing a single noisy fan with four quiet fans. This change was made to address an intermittent system failure likely caused by overheating due to the fan being turned off. The document provides a detailed overview of the amplifier wiring and system functionality.

During Harbor Acceptance Trials of the Oscar Sette, to verify extensive repairs, the PA/1MC system experienced a complete outage. Unfortunately, the diagnostics performed by the crew at the time of the outage did not reveal the cause of the outage. It was mentioned that the outage was similar to a previous outage where the system was down for multiple days while on mission.
During an inspection the next day by MD Marine (MD), the system was found operable. The main cabinet cooling fan, which was recommended to be replaced in a previous report, was found turned off probably due to excessive noise. This may have led to overheating.
Since the system was working when MD arrived further investigation would show normal operation.
Possible solutions for an intermittent failure were discussed between MD, Ship’s CO, Ship’s ET, and Ship’s Port Engineer:
-Replace the noisy fan with quieter models to reduce chances of someone turning off the fan -Replace the amplifiers
-Both are original equipment -Passive cooling -No redundancy -No space between amplifiers and pre-amp for cooling -Speakers had been added that push the amplifiers near the limits
This document records the modifications to the PA system.
Amplifiers The original configuration of the PA amplifiers used two single channel amplifiers, one for the main speaker distribution and one for the talk-back speakers. The new configuration uses two dual channel amplifiers in a primary and backup configuration. The A channel on both amplifiers supplies the main speakers while the B channel supplies the talk-back speakers. Selection switches are used to toggle between primary and backup amplifiers. Both switches in the up position turn on the primary amplifier.
Both switches in the down position turn on the backup amplifier. The inactive amplifier has the standby indicator illuminated.
1. Channel A of the new amplifier configuration is wired in place of the 250 watt amplifier
2. Channel B of the new amplifier configuration is wired in place of the 60 watt amplifier
3. The thermostat circuit did not exist at the time of this modification.
4. The single noisy cooling fan was replaced with four quiet cooling fans which blow warm air out the top of the cabinet. Cool air is brought in through a new cutout in the bottom of the front door assembly by fans integral to the amplifiers
5. This existing drawing reflects the general idea of how the system functions. It does not, however, reflect exactly how it has been wired due to years of modifications that have not been documented
6. The speaker selection switch connects the speaker systems to the desired amplifier
7. The amplifier selection switch utilizes logic inputs on the amplifiers to select which amplifier is active
