2.0 INCINERATOR
a) Installation of Incinerator: No special tools or instruments required.
b) Mounting the thermocouple (Drawing no. of thermocouple is 26N40004, enclosed in Appendix) (21B3 on the Pipe diagram in the Appendix): in the funnel minimum 2,5 m from the incinerator casing outlet according to IMO rules
The Incinerator should be installed and placed according to the rules of the classification societies and to the National Shipping Boards.
When installing the Incinerator the following points have to be considered:
- If welding the skid to the deck, remember to disconnect connections to the PLC as well as the flame control units (LFE 10)
- Lay-out of the funnel giving minimum of counter pressure
- Do not connect the welding electrodes to the electrical control panel.
- As few vibrations as possible.
- Transportation of the solid waste.
In front of the feeding door a space of app. 1.5 m must be foreseen for feeding of refuse bags. In front of the ash door it must be possible to remove the ashes.
Service area is required for handling the door of the control panel, to inspect and maintain the primary and secondary burner, the sludge pump and the valves. Free space on the top of the Incinerator is required for dismounting the burners. (approx. 700 mm from top of burner)
In the rear, it must be possible to adjust the air nozzles. The free space at the air intake for the main-blower must not decrease the area for the air intake to the blower.
The total air consumption of the Incinerator is app. 7.300 Nm3/h
In order to obtain a proper operation of the Incinerator it is important to have this air-flow available.
3.0 DIESEL OIL SUPPLY - DIESEL OIL TANK
It is advantageous to install a strainer in the diesel oil supply line to the tank in order to avoid any blocking of the diesel oil piping. The primary and secondary burners are provided with strainers built into the pumps. The oil pumps of the primary and secondary burners are gear wheel pumps, which constantly circulate the oil from and to the fuel tank. Approximately 5-10 times more diesel oil is circulated than is actually consumed.

5.0 COMPRESSED AIR SUPPLY
For supply of compressed air to the Incinerator, see dimension drawing (Appendix, drawing 26N10034) of the incinerator skid. The compressed air is needed for the sludge burner, for dampers, and quick closing valves, see pipe diagram (Appendix, drawing 26I33013) and technical data page 14 for required pressure and consumption. To avoid any blocking of the air pipes, a strainer (item OL, drawing 26I33013) is installed in the air supply piping system.
[FOR REPRODUCTION PURPOSES ONLY 13 ]
6.0 FLUE GAS FUNNEL
For the dimension of the funnel connection, see dimension drawing in Appendix, drawing no. 26N10034.
Max. counter pressure in the funnel, incl. outlet loss, is to be NOT more than 490 Pa (60 mm WG), which the incinerator itself can overcome, plus the 80 mm WG the flue gas fan can overcome, in total 140 mm WG including the free outlet pressure drop.
To obtain sufficient draught in the Incinerator, it is recommended to avoid too many sharp bends in the funnel.
Thermocouple (Appendix, drawing no. 26N40004, item 21B3 on drawing 26I33013) is supplied loose for mounting in funnel.
7.0 ELECTRICAL CABLE CONNECTION TO CONTROL PANEL
The power cable is connected directly to the control panel of the Incinerator. For cable entry, see arrangement of control panel (electrical diagrams). The following connections are to be connected with the terminal row in the control panel:
- Emergency stop
- Power supply
- Remote alarms
- Thermocouple in funnel (high flue gas temperature)
8.0 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Protection against Low Voltage:
It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that no abnormal operation of the Incinerator occurs due to low voltage. In general, a ship's generator system is secured against low voltage. However, if this is not the case, the customer must design their electrical system so that the Incinerator will not shut down at periods of low voltage. The tolerance of the voltage is ±5 %.
Black out:
The power supply to the Incinerator must be turned on immediate after black out. The cooling programme of the Incinerator will then automatically be activated.
In case of a black out of more than 5 to 7 minutes the possibility of damaging the Incinerator is very high.
In case the emergency switch board is hooked up to the main supply of the Incinerator, the plant will start at cooling program until the temperature reach 100 °C and/or until manual reset at the electric panel.

[FOR REPRODUCTION PURPOSES ONLY 15 ]
THE INCINERATOR
The Atlas Incinerator is controlled by a PLC-unit, which by a speed control unit automatically adjusts the sludge feeding capacity.
The Incinerator is designed with a primary combustion chamber for burning sludge oil and/or solid waste, and two secondary combustion chambers for burning un-combusted exhaust gases. The primary and first secondary combustion chamber is equipped with a diesel oil burner called primary burner and secondary burner respectively.
The Atlas Incinerator is designed to incinerate solid waste and all types of combustible non-explosive oil sludge with a flash point of min. 60°C, without being a nuisance to the surroundings. The Incinerator is made as a compact plant of the multi-chamber design.
PRIMARY COMBUSTION CHAMBER
The Incinerator is designed to combust solid waste and/or sludge oil. The heat from the primary burner will dry out and start burning the solid waste and/or ignite the sludge oil. The very large heat transmission area in the combustion chamber optimises the drying and burning of the solid waste.
SECONDARY COMBUSTION CHAMBER
The primary and the two secondary chambers are separated by a wall made of ceramic heavy duty refractory. In the secondary combustion chambers, the gases from the primary combustion chamber will be combusted definitively.
ADJUSTMENT OF AIR INTAKE NOZZLES
The incinerator is provided with 8 air nozzles, 3 on the front side, 3 on the back side, 2 on the end side (one for each of the secondary combustion chambers) and 1 on the top at the flue gas inlet to the secondary combustion chambers. The purpose of the nozzles is to supply sufficient air to the combustion process, especially when burning solid waste, and further to secure a total burn out of the flue gases in the secondary combustion chambers.
Factory settings: The nozzles are adjusted to max. sludge burning capacity, without burning solid waste. This setting can be found by closing the nozzles by turning them clockwise, and then turn them counter clockwise a ¼ round.
Adjustment on board: Depending on the layout of the funnel and depending on the amount and type of solid waste burned, the nozzles might require readjustment. If no measuring tool for measuring the soot number is available, please observe if there is coming dark smoke out of the stack. If so, then open the air nozzles in the primary combustion chamber until it stops.
If the exhaust gas temperature is too high, or if sparks are developed, this can be overcomed by opening the air nozzles in the secondary chambers.
