About this file
This is a specifications document detailing requirements for software and training for a RANGER-UAV LITE lidar system for the USDA Agricultural Research Service's Aerial Application Technology Research Unit in College Station, TX. The system will support project "22000-032-00D Improved Aerial Application Technologies for Precise and Effective Delivery of Crop Production Products."
The key requirements include software that enables sensor configuration and real-time control, transforms raw lidar data into georeferenced datasets, fuses lidar and image data, and provides cloud-based data processing through LiDARMill with up to 5TB storage capacity. Training requirements include in-person instruction for system operation, field assessment, and data processing workflows. The contractor must provide documentation proving software compatibility with the existing RANGER-UAV LITE system and include a minimum one-year warranty with maintenance and support. The system will be used for precise 3D measurements of crop plants, invasive weeds, and fruit trees to model plant structure and estimate growth parameters like height, volume, and biomass.

Software and training for a RANGER-UAV LITE lidar system
Background and Scope
A lidar system is crucial for our in-house project, “22000-032-00D Improved Aerial Application Technologies for Precise and Effective Delivery of Crop Production Products,” conducted in the Aerial Application Technology Research Unit in College Station. Precise 3D measurements of crop plants, invasive weeds, and fruit trees, such as pecans, are essential for modeling plant structure and estimating plant growth parameters like height, volume, and biomass. We have recently acquired a RANGER-UAV LITE lidar system, but we don’t have the necessary software and training to acquire and process data from the lidar system. Integrating a lidar system into our existing remote sensing program will enable us to capture both aerial imagery and lidar data simultaneously. This combined spatial data will not only support our project but also benefit other in-house projects in the other research units at the location, as well as collaborative efforts with our stakeholders and research partners.
Key requirements
The software and training required to acquire and process lidar data must have the following specifications:
1) Enables sensor configuration as well as real-time control and feedback from the
RANGER-UAV LITE lidar system directly to the operator
2) Transforms raw lidar data into georeferenced datasets
3) Fuses lidar data and image data
4) Automates data processing and management with cloud-based LiDARMill solution, including NavLab trajectory processing, advanced strip adjustment options (LiDARSnap), latest PLS filtering options, advanced relative and absolute accuracy reporting, up to 5 TB of project data storage
5) Provides in-person training to gain knowledge and confidence for acquisition procedures and workflows for the UAS-based lidar system, in-field data assessment and field training
6) Provide in-person and/or online training on data processing and management with all the required software
7) Minimum of one (1) year warranty with maintenance and support.
Contractor shall include documentation which demonstrates quoted software is compatible with the existing RANGER-UAV LITE lidar system.
