About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding Solicitation Number 12805B21Q0194 for Swine Modular Penning issued by the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Plains Area. The questions and answers provide clarification on the specifications for the modular penning system, including confirmation that the penning and gating components should be round tubular stock that is 1 inch in diameter spaced 2 inches apart and 30 inches high, installed 1 inch off the deck. The structural supports can be square or rectangular tubing, and their appropriate sizing is left to the fabricator.

The questions and answers seek to clarify drawing details and tubing sizes for the penning system that will hold up to 300 pound pigs, with a preference stated for round tubing for the penning/gating components and square or rectangular tubing for the supports. Sizing of at least 3 inches by 3 inches for the supports is provided as an example but left to the fabricator to determine the appropriately sized structural components.

Questions & Answers for Swine Modular Penning

1. Are there any drawings of the proposed sides of the Pens?

The Swine penning document provided, shows a crude drawing on the top of page 2 (that is the limit of my capabilities). Also, from the document “Penning/gating - “Vertical members are to be 1”O.D. round steel stock/tubing spaced equally. Maximum space between verticals is to be 2”, welds are to be continuous.” The height should be 30” above the deck, installed. The bottom of the penning/gating should be 1” off the decking. The ends would have double horizontal tabs that would be off set from the tabs on the support posts. The two would connect with rods. These rods can be easily pulled to allow for the penning/gating to be opened and closed at either end. The stock/tubing used for the penning/gating must be strong enough to hold up to 300-pound pigs.”

2. The specs call for “All tubular structural components”. Does that mean all structural tubular components are round, as the drawings appear to be square?

It would be preferable for the support to be square or rectangular. It would be best for the penning/gating components to be round.

3. What were the measurements of the tube, 3x3"?

The size would depend on your calculated requirement for holding up to the weight and daily use/abuse that would be placed on these pens by up to 300 lb pigs. 3”X3” may be acceptable for some applications.

4. The size of tube for both the posts and structural supports would be helpful.

I am counting on the fabricator to suggest appropriately sized structural supports.
