AutoCAD SHX Text It was assumed erosion created the observed fish barrier on the downstream side of the existing culvert. Erosion likely played a role to some degree. However, after excavating the pits it appears the barrier may have existed after the culvert placement since large rock and an extremely hard layer was encountered in pits excavated at the site. Large rock, in excess of 3 feet in diameter, can be seen on the upstream side of the culvert. The rocks appear to be native and were removed during the excavation for the culvert. The site investigation, which occurred on 9/18/2019, was halted at a depth of 5 feet in Pit 1 where refusal was encountered. The material in Pit 5 appeared to be bedrock or an extremely over consolidated, cemented, volcanic flow. Excavation was halted at a depth of 6 feet in Pit 2 due to difficult digging and large rock.
