About this file
This is a Schedule of Items document detailing the scope of work for a federal contract opportunity with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service for mechanical site preparation and fuels reduction work on the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota during Fiscal Year 2026.
The contract encompasses two separate awards: Award 01 covers rock raking mechanical site preparation on the Laurentian Ranger District in Aurora, Minnesota, involving 146 estimated acres across seven map units (LN-01 through LN-07) with a period of operations from June 1 through November 4, 2026, dependent on soil conditions. Work requires moving boulders to establish temporary road access from Forest Road 273 and Township Murphy Lake, with roads to be re-closed upon completion. Award 02 covers mastication fuels work on the LaCroix Ranger District in Cook, Minnesota, involving 40 estimated acres across two map units (CWRRP-1 and CWRRP-2) with a period of operations extending from June 1, 2026 through April 1, 2027. The mastication units contain a mixture of mature pine, cedar, birch, and aspen with significant balsam fir infestation from spruce budworm damage, including standing and downed material; units are marked with pink flagging and accessed via Mud Creek Road. Both awards require pre-operational meetings with the Contracting Officer's Representative before implementation. Technical points of contact are Michael Sauter for the Laurentian District and Paul Valento or Lori Karau for the LaCroix District. Offerors must submit unit prices for each contract line item extended to a total price.

Site description that apply to the Mastication Map Units.
These units have a mixture of mature pine, cedar, birch, and aspen. The general size of the aspen, and birch is between 6 – 10” at DBH. Most of the cedar, spruce, and pines are greater than 10” DBH. The treatment area has a moderate to heavy stocking of balsam fir in the midstory and understory. The area was hit by spruce budworm, so there is an abundance of dead standing and down balsam fir. The work would be treating all balsam fir regardless of size. The average size of the balsam fir is 1 to 6-inch DBH but balsam fir up to 14-inch DBH exists. In some areas there is greater than 5,000 stems to the acre of balsam fir. There are some larger boulders scattered throughout the treatment area. Some areas may be steep, especially areas adjacent to the lakeshore.
