About this file
This document contains an amendment to a solicitation for a bridge replacement project on the Sawtooth National Forest. The amendment provides responses to contractor questions and extends the proposal due date to February 1, 2022 for emails submitted to the specified contracting officer. The project involves removing an existing nail laminated timber bridge and abutments, installing a new steel superstructure, concrete grade beams, gravel wear surface on the bridge and approaches, installing rip-rap, and installing four Type 3 object markers on glued-laminated guard posts. Alternative designs for the steel backwall and bridge decking material will be considered during the submittal review process provided they meet all loading and design requirements. The amendment also notes an existing phone line in a conduit on site will be relocated by the Forest Service during construction.

RFI Questions and Answers:
1. Question: The bulkhead calls a for steel sheet pile, would a steel backwall be an accepted as an alternative? Answer: A sheetpile is a steel wall, "Alternate backwall designs shall be included in stamped shop drawings for approval during the submittal process after contract award."
2. Question: The plans are calling out for 12x4.25x7ga galvanized bridge decking material. Since the zinc requirement is the same for 12ga and 9ga as 7ga, can lighter gauge bridge decking material be used if it does not interfere with the Live Load (HL-93) or exceed the live load deflection (L/800)? If additional sacrificial steel is the consideration for little added service, can proven coatings be used on lighter gauge material? Such as polymeric paint or bituminous coatings? 7GA material is essentially a sole source material at this time. Answer: Alternate bridge decking material will be reviewed during the submittal process after contract award. The alternate bridge decking material will be reviewed to include support of the design loads for bending, shear, deflection, and any additional requirement by the AASHTO bridge design manual. It does not have to be 7 gauge. The submittal must include deck calculations for review.
There is no need for additional polymeric paint or any other protection than what is already specified.
3. Question: I saw in one of the photos a conduit on the side of the glulam stringer. Is there electrical or phone/cable line inside that needs to be preserved & installed on the new bridge. Answer: The conduit contains a phone line; the Forest Service will contact the telephone company and have it moved during construction.
