Puncheon Board Dimensions

Needed: 0.5 miles of linear trail boards

Red or Yellow Cedar (Red preferred)

Dimensions 3 inch depth by 12 inch width by 24 inch length which equals 6 board feet per unit. 2,640 linear (trail) feet = 660 bundles of 4 boards

3 inches in depth

12 inches width

24 inches length

In bundles of four for ease hauling into job site via pack boards.

Puncheon boards with these dimensions(above) should comprise at least 70% of the total order.

For visual reference: here is a picture of the board's 12" width dimension.

Due to the abundance of material wasted in the manufacture of these boards in the 12" width dimension and our continuing goal to reduce our environmental impact, this dimension can be reduced to 6", 8" or 10" so less material is consumed.

Regarding the order in entirety, at a maximum, 70% of the boards delivered need to be 12" in width while the remaining 30% can be comprised of boards with the 6, 8 or 10 inch width.

see below for variance allowance exemption

For reference: Here is a picture of the board's 3" depth dimension.

For reference: Here is a picture of the board's 24" length dimension.

For reference: Here is a picture of the grooved stepping surface.

The top sides in this photo have been milled/planed with grooves.

Previously used material was rough split on the top, providing more traction and meeting historical standards. Our Heritage Department has specified that to meet historical requirements for use in the field the boards must be milled with a grooved/corduroy top or be hand split with the grain. Rough sawn/ milled tops do not meet these specifications and are not allowed.

Either method is fine, hand split or grooved/corduroy tops. No bark or rounded sides.

The following are pictures of the boards previously purchased and after they were installed into the trail surface. Notice the width (12”) is actually the distance each board covers of linear trail and the length(24”) is the width of our trail tread. Therefore, it is important that the grooved/ split top side runs parallel along the 24” dimension(perpendicular to the trail).
