From PNW-GTR-364, "Guidelines for Estimating Volume, Biomass, and Smoke Production for Piled Slash" and other sources
Volumes are in the cube of feet (or of any other linear unit used consistently).

* Details for fellow geeks: For several years APCD used the half-ellipsoid shape for piles with oval bases. We recently realized that the vertical cross-section of a half-ellipsoid is a semi-circle, or the same cross-sectional shape as the ice-cream scoop half-sphere. The vertical cross-section of the most commonly used shape, the "round mound", is a parabola. A more accurate volume estimate for piles which are longer than they are wide may come from a shape with an ellipse for the footprint, and a parabola for the vertical cross-section. This shape is the awkwardly-named 'elliptical paraboloid' and as of 6/11 is a new addition to the pile volume calculator spreadsheet.

Tons volume per pile

Guidelines for estmating Volume, Biomass, and smoke production for Piles slash (PNW-GTR-364)Appendix 1:
Gross VolumeA HypotheticalStep one—Total gross volume of the pile—
Step 10CFExampleA. Select a representative pile shape: Pile shape is half-ellipsoid—shape code 6.
Net VolumePages 20-21B. Calculate the gross volume:
Step 20.00CF0.1packing ratio (Ponderosa Pine )Formula method. Volume = = 2178 cubic feet
Nomagram: Refer to figure 5 and follow the arrowed line to the X-axis at the upper
Step 3Densityright, where the gross volume equals about 2.2 thousand cubic feet.
24pounds per CF (Ponderosa Pine)
Step two—Net volume of the woody biomass—
ConsumableFormula method: Net volume = Gross volume x packing ratio; therefore,
Step 40.00Pounds2178*0.20 = 435.6 cubic feet.
0.00TonsNomagram: Refer to figure 6 and follow the arrowed line to the Y-axis at the left,
where the net volume equals about 435 cubic feet.
Step three—Density or weighted-average density of the wood
Formula method: The pile is 75 percent Douglas-fir and 25 percent western hemlock.
Refer to table 2 for the densities of Douglas-fir (28.1 Ib/ft3) and western hemlock
(26.2 Ib/ft3). Calculate the weighted average:
(0.75*28.1)+(0.25*26.2)=27.63 pounds per cubic foot.
Nomagram: Refer to figure 7, where the diagonal line connecting Douglas-fir and
western hemlock intersects the vertical line representing 75 percent Douglas-fir at
about 27.7 Ib/ft3 (on the Y-axis).
16
Step four—Consumable (oven-dry) mass of wood—
Formula method: Net wood mass = net wood volume x wood density
435.6*27.63 = 12,036 pounds or ~ 6 tons.
Nomagram: Refer to figure 6 and follow the arrowed line to the curves on the right,
then down to the X-axis, where the net mass of wood is approximately 6.0 tons.
