About this file
This document is the IRS-FMSS National Workspace Standards, a comprehensive facilities design guide detailing individual workspace standards and support space standards for Internal Revenue Service facilities.
The document provides standardized specifications for various workstation configurations and support spaces, including detailed furniture component lists, electrical requirements, storage capacities, and floor plans. Individual workspace standards include clerical employee workstations (W.48.2.C at 6'×8'), TAC IAR Screener stations (W.85.1 at 8'6"×10'), TAC ITAS workstations (W.88.1 at 8'×11'3"), and ADA-compliant ITAS workstations (W.108.1 at 8'×13'6"). Each configuration specifies work surfaces, panel dimensions and heights, seating requirements, lighting specifications (LED task lights), accessory items, electrical provisions (typically 3 duplex outlets plus 1 dedicated duplex outlet for computer use), and storage components measured in linear feet of filing and drawer capacity. Support space standards include a Small Common Technology Area (WORK.48.5 at 6'×8'), an Equipment Support Node (WORK.36.2 at 3'×12'3"), a Manager Office (O.96.1 at 8'×12'), a Small Conference Room (CONF.192.1 at 12'×16'), file storage solutions (FILE.10.1 and FILE.10.3), and various other support facilities. All specifications include notes on panel thickness verification, height-adjustable work surface options where applicable, power management requirements, and references to the IRS-FMSS Taxpayer Assistance Centers Design Guide for additional details. The standards are dated 5/1/14 and are organized by chapter with cross-referenced floor plans and 3D workspace visualizations.

NOTE: The IAR workstation standard has been updated to be mounted on systems furniture panels instead of wall-mounted work surfaces, and using a transaction counter instead of the pass-through window in a ceiling high partition wall. The FMSS Customization in AutoCAD reflects this change for the IAR in the Tool Palettes.
NOTE: For Small TAC sites with fewer than 3 IT AS, the second IAR is not required; in those cases, minimize the footprint of the IAR workstation by omitting the 4' wide work surface and panel for the second IAR seat.

Design Description
This equipment support node may use systems furniture or freestanding tables. It may have work surfaces on one or both sides depending on the equipment needed. It provides space for a small to medium-sized copier, two printers and trash receptacles. A fax machine can be installed in lieu of a printer, or the work surface can provide space for other required equipment.
Furniture Description
Systems Furniture
One or two systems furniture work surfaces x 24"D can be used. Overheads store paper and other supplies above.
OR
Worktables
Two or three worktables are provided to accommodate equipment such as printers and fax machines. The tables should have two folding “T” bases for flexibility, so the area can be reconfigured in the future.

================:::::::=============.I _.., Design Description
The small conference room is designed to accommodate up to eight people.
Furniture Description Conference Table
A rectangular conference table should have stationary legs or pedestal bases and seat six. These legs/bases should also house power and telecommunications cable. The tabletop should be capable of providing one duplex, electrical outlet per two seats ( at the table) and one telephone/data jack per seat.
It is recommended to install power and data underneath the conference table.
Conference Chairs a nominal 5" in thickness. However, the type of construction determines the actual thickness of the partition and must be considered during planning.
■ Recommended partition type is PT-2 or PT-4.
■ Recommended hardware type is HW-2.
■ All wall mounted electrical, data, and telephone outlets mounted 18" above finished floor (AFF) unless otherwise noted.
■ Refer to the IRS-FMSS Facilities Design Standards
- specifically, Chapter 10, Special Occupancies, "Meeting Room/Conference Room" for additional requirements.
Modernization & Smart Conference Room:
■ Data line and power outlet (approx. 5' AFF) on narrow wall for monitor
Smart Conference Room:
■ Data line and power outlet in floor in the center of room
■ Data line outside room adjacent to room signage
(approx. 3'- 4' AFF)
Upholstered conference chairs with arms and a five-star caster base are appropriate for this room.
Whiteboard/ Tack Board Cabinet
A wall-mounted whiteboard/ tack board cabinet is proposed for one end of this room. This unit will have tackboards on the inside face of the cabinet (double) doors. A marker ledge is to be provided at the base of the whiteboard. Typical mounting height is 30" AFF to the bottom of the unit.
A wall-mounted track system may be used in lieu of a cabinet. The system includes a track from which a variety of components may be hung, such as a whiteboard, tack board, or flip chart holder. The track is mounted so that the bottom of the components is at 2'-6" AFF.
