About this file
This document provides the physical and functional descriptions for 27 different detonating transfer assembly (DTA) lines used on the B-2 aircraft. The DTAs consist of plastic tubing coated with a reactive material that sustains a shock wave when initiated, allowing the shock wave to travel down the tube at high speeds and pressures to initiate explosives at the other end. The document lists each DTA part number, National Stock Number, length, and end tip sizes. A related federal contract opportunity solicitation seeks DTA and slapper mixer detonator lines for the F-16 and B-2 aircraft under an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract. The solicitation does not provide pricing terms or response dates. The Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Lifecycle Management Center at Hill Air Force Base is the contracting agency.

This is the general physical and functional description for the B-2 TLX (PN 52170-xx and 51271-xx) lines from item TO 11P3-2-17-7. Also attached are the specifics for each line per the TO.
10.1.1 Physical Description, DTAs. The principle elements of each of the 11 types of DTAs are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. Construction of detonating cord/ST utilized in each type DTA is shown in Table 2.
A mixture of small flakes of aluminum and small particles of Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) explosive is utilized as coating material in the plastic tube of type ST and STD DTAs and part Nos. 52170-xx and 52171-xx. Hexanitrostilbene (HNS) explosive is used in detonating cords for all DTAs (except type ST and part Nos. 52170-xx and 52171-xx) and in all the standard end fittings (except type Receptor (R) which has only lead azide explosive in one tip) along with lead azide explosive. The tipless end of type STD DTA and part Nos. 52170-xx and 52171-xx consists of a small length of extruded propellant. Type STD DTA consists of a length of ST DTA swaged to a length of type D DTA, with a standard tip on the ST end and no tip on the type D end. Part Nos. 52170-xx and 52171-xx have the same basic configuration as ST DTA except they have a polyolefin (heat shrink) covering in addition to the wire braid.
10.1.2 Functional Description, DTAs.
a. Type ST DTA and part Nos. 52170-xx and 52171-xx are a plastic wall ST whose inside surface is coated with a reactive material (flakes of aluminum and particles of HMX explosive). When a high intensity shock pulse is created at either end of plastic tube (by a powerful percussion or stab primer, a blasting cap, standard end of any other type of DTA or tipless ends in some applications) reactive material in tube wall is consumed, providing energy needed to sustain shock wave and cause it to travel the length of the tube at a velocity of approximately 4401.4 feet-per-second and at a pressure of several thousand pounds per square inch (psi). When shock wave reaches other end of tube, it is capable of initiating explosive in a standard end (if one is used) or of initiating tipless end of another type ST DTA or part Nos. 52170-xx and 52171-xx. Output of a standard end of type ST DTA or part Nos. 52170-xx and 52171-xx is capable of initiating any of the other types of DTAs. Outputs from the tipless ends are only capable of initiating other tipless DTAs.
