About this file

This is a field survey report conducted by C4 Doors in May 2024 assessing two failing 64' x 24' canopy tip-up hangar doors at Building 1340 at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. The report details multiple deficiencies found during inspection, including cable misalignment, incorrect door centering, improper lifting pins, missing sheave axle locks, and incorrectly installed top rollers. The doors have been inoperable and locked out since 2023 following failures that began after a 2019 renovation by Watterson Construction.

The report concludes that the doors are not fit to return to operation and presents two recommended options: 1) A complete overhaul to convert to a single drive counterweight system with new components including insulated panels, rollers, tracks, and controls, or 2) A more cost-effective conversion to a self-supporting bottom rolling hangar door system consisting of two 78' x 24' sections that would operate on rails with features like bottom rail heating, floating top rollers, and bevel gear motor controls. The second option would allow manual operation by 3-5 airmen or a tug if needed.

FIELD REPORT INTRODUCTION

May 17, 2024

Attention: Dave Kennedy Heritage-M2C1 Joint Venture

HCR 60 Box 4690-1 Delta Junction, AK 99737

Location: Building 1340 Eielson AFB, Alaska

Subject: Canopy Tip-up Hangar Door Field Survey &

Assessment.

History: Maintenance Dock Eielson afb, Alaska Designed by: the Austin company Constructed By: Landmark Contractors.

Constructed in: 1983 – DACA-85-84-c-0003 Renovated by: Watterson construction.

Renovated in: 2019 – fa5004-19-C-A010

Introduction: C4 Doors was contracted by Heritage-M2C1 Joint

Venture Project Manager Dave Kennedy to perform a field survey and assessment on two failing 64 foot by 24 foot canopy tip-up hangar doors. The two canopy doors start experiencing failures after the renovation in 2019. Minor repairs were performed by Yale mechanical. The doors continued to experience failure and were locked out in 2023. C4 Doors performed an onsite field survey assessment the week of May 6, 2024. The following report is the assessment of the canopy tip-up hangar doors observed deficiencies and recommendation.

DISCRIPTION: HANGAR Door opening survey.

PROBLEM: confirm hangar door opening jamb, header and supporting truss are within tolerance for normal operation.

findings: no structural member found out of tolerance on the south bay opening. The north bay, north jamb was found the be 5/16” out of plumb into the opening and ¾” out of plumb into the building.

TAB 3

DISCRIPTION: Hangar door cable misalignment

PROBLEM: Upon inspection it was observed that the picking cables were not plumb, upon further inspection, it was observed that the cable sheaves were replaced and not realigned. This can cause the door section to shift out of center in the door opening.

SOLUTION: adjust sheave housing and realign cables.

REFERENCE: a – North & south bay cable misalignment

TAB 4

DISCRIPTION: HANGAR DOOR SECTION NOT CENTERED IN OPENING

PROBLEM: THE HANGAR DOOR SECTIONS ARE NOT CENTERED IN THE

DOOR OPENING DUE TO THE CABLE MISALIGHNMENT

CAUSED BY THE NEW CABLE SHEAVE BEING A LARGER

DIAMETER AND THE HOUSING NOT BEING REALIGHNED

AFTER INSTALLATIOIN. This misalignment can cause the door frame and components to drag on the door opening. In addition it was observed the side rollers coming out of the side track and vertical broken due to the shifting of the door section.

SOLUTION: CENTER HANGAR DOOR SECTION AND REALIGHN SHEAVE

AND CABLES

TAB 5

DISCRIPTION: Incorrect Cable Picking pin.

PROBLEM: The cable picking pins installed are grade 5 bolts.

These bolts are not designed for lifting with a swaged end and picking eye. This is due to the threads of the bolt causing additional wear when rotated under load. It was also observed that the bolts are not sized correctly and are loose in the picking eye.

SOLUTION: install correct picking pins.

REFERENCE: a – present lifting bolts

B – example of correct lifting pin.

TAB 6

DISCRIPTION: Cable Sheaves missing axle locks.

PROBLEM: The cable sheave axle locks. This can allow the axles to spin out and cause failure.

SOLUTION: install lock on sheave axle

REFERENCE: a – present sheave axle.

B – example of sheave axle lock.

TAB 7

DISCRIPTION: New top roller installed incorrectly.

PROBLEM: The new top rollers are installed incorrectly.

First, the rollers are not installed in a straight line, this will cause the door to deflect during operation. Second, rollers have been modified due to conflict with the cables this could cause failure. Third, the rollers are missing safety chain.

SOLUTION: Replace/repair modified roller and install correctly.

REFERENCE: a – present modified rollers.

B – Roller Cable Conflict.

FIELD REPORT CONCLUSION

In conclusion of the field survey/assessment on the canopy hangar doors located in building 1340 on Eielson AFB, AK. C4 Doors finds the canopy hangar doors not fit to return to operation. C4 Door recommends two options for the path forward.

Option 1: a complete overhaul of the canopy hangar doors like the already performed upgrades to buildings 1335 and 1338. This would include changing the system to a single drive counterweight system, door frame structural inspection, new insulated panel exterior siding, and top rollers, picking eyes, upper tracks, counterweight towers, motors, and Controls.

Option 2: A more cost-effective solution, converting the canopy doors into a self-supporting bottom rolling hangar door.

This style of door would have a self-supporting truss and frame engineered to today’s standards and would not rely on the building for support. The system would consist of two sections 78’ x 24’. The two sections would run on two rails the full length of both openings. Each section would be stored in the adjacent opening during operation, achieving one door opening at a time.

The standard operating speed is 60 feet per minute, this would mean the operating time needed to open and close both openings would be just under 5 minutes, not including aircraft field operations.

Additional features would be bottom rail heating and drainage, floating top rollers, insulated panel siding, bevel gear motor and controls with brake release for manual operation. Manual operations can be preformed by pushing or pulling the door frame with a tug or by 3-5 airmen, Best Regards, Barkley Blair – Project Design Manager & Lead Installer C4 Hangar & Industrial Doors Direct) 425.922.6327 Barkley@C4Doors.com
