About this file
This document is a requirements specification for the USB Breath Switch, an accessory device designed for the Library of Congress's Digital Talking Book Machine (DTBM) to assist patrons with physical limitations in operating the player's keypad. The breath switch translates air pulses (puffs and sucks) into twenty pre-defined control commands, enabling users to perform functions including play/stop, navigation, volume adjustment, speed control, and menu operations. The device consists of a custom-molded plastic enclosure housing microcontroller and electronic components, a six-foot transparent silicone mouth tube with an adjustable garment clip, an inline replaceable filter to protect against moisture, and a USB Type-A connector for power and communication with the DTB playback device.
The enclosure must meet strict specifications including dimensions not exceeding 1.0 inch by 1.0 inch by 1.5 inch (width by length by height), Pantone Plastics Q310-1-5 color with MT-1055-6 texture, and tool-free snap-together assembly. Materials must comply with UL 60065 fire safety standards and ASTM E595-07 outgassing limits, with no flammable or hazardous components. The device must function within a maximum power draw of 2.5 Watts (500 mA at 5V) from the USB port, operate across extensive environmental temperature ranges from minus 45 to plus 60 degrees Celsius with corresponding humidity variations, and withstand drop testing per UL 60065 section 12.1.4. The breath switch registers as a USB Keyboard and includes red and green LED indicators for device status. Software functionality encompasses normal operation mode with puff/suck command recognition, calibration mode allowing user-specific parameter adjustment, and data retrieval mode for diagnostics and system monitoring.

1. Scope This specification defines requirements for the enclosure of the USB breath switch, filter, and mouth tube. The USB breath switch is an accessory for patrons of the talking-book program. The breath switch is used by patrons with physical limitations that have difficulty using the NLS player’s keypad. In some cases the physical limitation may make it impossible to operate a keypad. The breath switch provides for control of the player using pulses of air. The breath switch consists of a tube held in the patron’s mouth and programmable electronic components that translate air pulses into keypad commands. The tube contains an inline filter to protect the electronics from moisture and remain sanitized. The electronic components are enclosed in a custom designed plastic housing created with injection molding technology.

NLS USB Breath Switch Operations:
The NLS USB Breath Switch is designed particularly for DTB program. Rather than a single PLAY/STOP function, it can use to assert 20 pre-defined DTB functions. This breath switch accepts puff as well as suck at the air line. And it also can accept up to 2 combinations of puffs or sucks. For each puff or suck, this breath switch also discriminates normal duration puff or suck and long duration puff and suck. All these capabilities of this breath switch allow it to decode up to 20 different functions for DTB machine.
Normal Operation:
The following table describes the puff-suck combinations and their corresponding functions for DTB.

During the normal operation, green LED is turned on when legitimate puff or suck input is detected. The red LED is to indicate transmissions to USB. idle puff suck idle
Calibration mode:
During Calibration mode, the LED should be on when waiting input from the air tube and off when input is detected. Green LED is used during puff calibration; red LED is used during suck calibration. Both green and red are blinking (yellowish color) when changing calibration mode.
Visual calibration, in additional to the LED light status signals, can be done on any computer. Just put the cursor onto a text editor, such as a WordPad, NotePad.
Audible calibration can be done on DTB machine by plugging into the AT port. Catridge should be unplugged from DTB machine. When entered the Calibration mode, double tone will be heard. When prompting for puff or suck, a single tone will be heard. When changing calibration mode, double tone will be heard. Upon exiting the Calibration mode, a Play/Stop will be sent to DTBM to indicate end-of-calibration.
To enter Calibration mode, user will need to suck on the air tube for exceeding 3 seconds (count 0 to 3). Upon entry, information will be display to review current parameters and relative info. Then, the first calibration is for puff calibration. User is to assert normal puffs into the air tube once at a time when prompted for any number of times. Only the last 20 samples will be used. When enough puffs are sampled, user can go on to suck calibration by a suck. The suck calibration will come on and user is to assert normal sucks into the air tube, again, once at a time when prompted. To conclude the calibration and exit, simply assert a puff. The samples will be saved and user parameters will be generated, saved and used. (Note: a terminating signal for puff calibration is a suck and a terminating signal for suck calibration is a puff, except the following shortcuts.)
The above desribes a normal complete calibration process. There are a few shortcuts:
· To save and exit anytime during the calibration, just puff & hold longer than 3 seconds. This can be a shortcut to skip suck calibration.
· To toggle between user parameters and default parameters, just suck & hold longer than 3 seconds at anytime during the calibration.
· To just reset to default parameters, suck or puff for longer than 7 seconds at anytime during the calibration.
· To exit and save nothing, unplug the USB from the host.
Data retrieving mode:
This mode should be used by NLS to retrieving info onto the screen:
· At normal operation, puff into the air tube & hold for longer than 7 seconds will display current parameters setting and the samples collected on the device. There are 3 arrays, one for puff samples, one for suck samples and one for temporary samples (work samples array).
· At normal operation, puff into the air tube & hold for longer than 7 seconds and followed with another puff for 3 seconds will do the same above and also do these extra steps:
· Erase all samples arrays
· Reset to default parameter settings
· Re-adjust the bias of the pressure sensors A sample of calibration session (in a PC over a text editor, such as Notepad):
Suck for longer than 3 seconds to enter the calibration mode. The unit will then display the following:
