Project Name: Jemez/Cuba Cultural Resource Survey 2020, SFNF:

Project Description: The Seven Springs Project Area (analysis area) is approximately 7,700 acres. Steep topography, accessibility and leave islands for wildlife habitat will contribute to a smaller footprint of total mechanically thinned acres. Proposed actions in the project area include mechanically thinning and prescribed Fire, broadcast and/or pile burning. Survey of area will be 100% coverage of areas within the project area without previous survey that meets current standards.

The Seven Springs unit is a total of 7608 acres. Approximately 4708 acres are not surveyed to current standards, however there is approximately 2255 acres that are shown to be 40% or greater slope within the area needing survey.

Poso and Dead Horse Units: The Golondrino Wildlife Management Prescribe Fire project (Poso and Dead Horse Units) is approximately 33,741 acres in total, the Poso unit is 2379 acres and the Dead Horse unit is 2357 acres within the Golondrino management area. The project will improve wildlife habitat across the area. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish has identified this area as a priority for managing mule deer and Rocky Mountain elk. There is a need to increase the quantity and quality of browse and forage species. Project activities will consist of managing prescribed and naturally ignited fires (e.g. fires caused by lightning strikes) to remove fuels for resource benefit. Fuels treatment through mastication, and the full range of strategic and tactical management options available for planned and unplanned ignitions is proposed as part of a phased program of fi.re hazard reduction activities. Prescribed burning activities will include hand and mechanical piling of thinning slash, pile burning, and broadcast burning. No new road construction is proposed.

The Poso unit is a total of 2379 acres. Approximately 1077 acres are not surveyed to current standards, however there is approximately 380 acres that are shown to be 40% or greater slope.

The Dead Horse unit is a total of 2357 acres. Approximately 1962 acres are not surveyed to current standards, however there is approximately 270 acres that are shown to be 40% or greater slope.

Project Location: Seven Springs Unit (base) is located on the Jemez and Cuba Ranger Districts of the SFNF in Sandoval County, NM. Seven Springs USGS 7.5' Quad, T19N, R2E, sec 1-4, 9-11, 12; T19N, R3E, Sec 6, 7; T20N, R2E, Sec 30, 31.

Poso (option 1) is located on the Cuba Ranger District of the SFNF in Rio Arriba County, NM. Llaves USGS 7.5' Quad, T26N, R2E, sec 17-20 and 29-32.

Dead Horse (option 2): is located on the Cuba Ranger District of the SFNF in Rio Arriba County, NM.

Ilaves USGS 7.5' Quad, T26N, R1E sec 35, 36, T25N, R1E, sec 1-3, 10-12, T26N, R2E sec 31, and T25N, R2E sec 6.

Environmental Setting and Access: The project area is located in pinon-juniper woodland and ponderosa pine forest. Soils are primarily decomposed sandstone with a significant clay component. Elevations range from approximately 7,400-8,000 feet above mean sea level (amsl).

Cultural Context: Pre-contact archaeological sites in the project area range from Early Archaic artifact scatters to Puebloan habitation complexes. A number of historic period sites are also present.

Seven Springs Unit: A review of the SFNF GIS layers and previous heritage resource surveys indicates that there have been 10 previously recorded archaeological sites within the entire project area. Previous and adjacent survey results indicate that site densities will be low, approximately 1 site per 350 acres.

Poso Unit and Dead Horse Units: A review of the SFNF GIS layers and previous heritage resource surveys indicates that there have been approximately 110 previously recorded archaeological sites within the both project areas. Previous and adjacent survey results indicate that site densities will be high, approximately 1 site per 40 acres.

Estimated Site Density (does not provide a specific numeric value but can include range): Seven Springs Unit: Low site density, approximately 1 site per 350 acres. Average site density on SFNF is 1 site per ~120 acres. There are 10 previously recorded sites within the Seven Springs unit.

Poso and Dead Horse Units: High site density, approximately 1 site per 40 acres. It may be higher as a large portion of both units are not currently surveyed. There are 51 previously recorded sites in Poso and 58 previously recorded sites in Dead Horse. Average site density on SFNF is 1 site per ~120 acres.

Survey Requirements (must conform to contract specifications; list any shovel testing requirements/provisions; may include list or table of known sites and any site-specific requirements, if applicable): see attached

Site Forms and Other Documentation (if modified from National Forest Service Site Form, per 5.2.2):

Santa Fe NF version of the NM LA site form

Site Flagging/Tags (if different than 5.2.3): same

Data Requirements (e.g. NRM data entry, I-Mobile, GIS, as allowed by contract): NRM data entry

Collections Policy (if different than 6.6): same

Property Furnished by Forest (if different than 3.1): same

Other Project Details/Consideration: Base unit is Seven Springs with two options, 1. Poso and 2.

Deadhorse. For Poso & Dead Horse: The main road systems in the Golondrino project area are in good shape, as you get off of the main roads you are looking at more difficult travel when conditions are wet.

For Seven Springs: HWY 126 is good year round; the FS roads into the surrounding canyon bottoms are not the best and will be more difficult travel when conditions are wet.
