Summary of NIST Boulder Building #2 1330 Fume Hood Replacement Project Specifications
This document is a comprehensive set of technical specifications and site standards for the replacement of a laboratory fume hood and associated exhaust system at NIST Boulder Building 2, Room 1330. The project requires demolition of an existing 1992-era tabletop fume hood and installation of a new walk-in fume hood with a rooftop exhaust system to support research involving larger equipment and toxic gases. Key deliverables include architectural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire alarm modifications; removal and replacement of countertops, sinks, and plumbing connections; ductwork and rooftop exhaust fan replacement; electrical circuit modifications and cable tray work; lightning protection system connections; installation of a panic alarm system integrated with the building fire alarm; structural design and installation of exhaust stack supports; and ASHRAE 110 performance testing of the completed hood and exhaust system. The anticipated period of performance is approximately six months from award.
The specifications establish detailed requirements across multiple divisions covering submittal procedures, operation and maintenance documentation, laboratory fume hood specifications with performance criteria (including face velocity testing at 60 fpm and ASHRAE 110 compliance), HVAC identification and testing/adjusting/balancing, PVC exhaust ductwork, utility set fans, comprehensive electrical requirements (general electrical, common work results, equipment wiring systems, low-voltage conductors and cables, grounding and bonding, hangers and supports, raceways and boxes, sleeves and seals, and identification systems), wiring devices, fuses, enclosed switches and circuit breakers, lightning protection systems, communications grounding and bonding, cable trays, and fire alarm system installation. Electrical work must comply with NIST site standards including specific color-coding for conduits and labels (grey for normal power, yellow for life safety, white for research normal, black for UPS/generator research, orange for telecom, green for equipment, blue for mechanical controls, red for fire alarm, and purple for security). All materials must comply with the Buy American Act, and the fume hood manufacturer must be one of three approved vendors (Bedcolab, Labconco, or equal) with ISO 9001 certification and 30+ years of fume hood manufacturing experience. The contractor must provide comprehensive testing documentation, training for Owner personnel, operation and maintenance manuals, and coordinate all work with NIST personnel throughout the construction period.
