About this file
Attachment A - Background is a technical document from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) detailing specifications for a musky larval recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). The document outlines a comprehensive fish production system utilizing city water as the source, with initial fish biomass starting at 2.3 pounds in two 3-foot diameter circular tanks and scaling up to approximately 45-50 pounds in three 3-foot circular culture tanks. The system is designed to operate for a minimum of 80 days, with potential expansion to 100+ days, and will progressively increase from a minimum flow rate of 16 gallons per minute (gpm) to a maximum of 100 gpm by the end of production.
The technical specifications include precise environmental parameters such as water temperature ranges of 45-60°F, with system temperatures maintained between 62-72°F. The fish will be fed at rates of 12-7% of their biomass, using feed composed of 48-52% protein and 11-14% fat. The document provides a detailed table tracking fish population, biomass, feed rates, and tank configurations across different production phases. The system is configured to utilize three tank sizes (two 3-foot and three 6-foot circular tanks) with a total equipment space of 5' x 11', demonstrating a carefully planned approach to scalable aquaculture production with future expansion capabilities.

Attachment A - Background
City water will be utilized as the source water. It has a temperature range of 45o-60oF. Minimum and maximum temperature of the system will be between 62o-72oF. The system should have a maximum make-up rate of 10% flow rate. Beginning fish biomass will be 2.3 pounds in two 3’ diameter circular tanks and end with approximately 45-50 pounds of fish in 3 - three-foot circular culture tanks (Table 1).
Total number of tanks at the end of production will be three 6-foot circular tanks. Minimum flow rate will be 16 gpm; maximum flow rate at the end of production will be 100 gpm (Table 1). System will be run for a minimum of 80 days. Future construction will include more tanks, therefore we want to maximize output within our budget to at least 100 gpm+ for future tanks (days 100+, table 1). Fish will be fed 12-7% of their biomass throughout production. Fish feed is composed of 48-52% protein and 11- 14% fat (Figure 1). Space available for equipment will be 5’ x 11’ (figure 2).
