About this file
Geotechnical Data Attachments Summary
This document is a geotechnical data attachment file prepared by Tighe & Bond for the City of New Haven, Connecticut, in support of environmental remediation and site improvement services at 198 River Street, New Haven. The file contains subsurface exploration data including five test pits (TP-1 through TP-5) excavated on March 1, 2024, by Red Technologies, and two borings (B-1 and B-2) drilled on June 17, 2022, by Clarence Welti Associates Inc. The test pits, ranging in depth from 8.5 to 11 feet, were terminated due to groundwater and pit collapse conditions. The borings extended to depths of 35.4 to 35.5 feet and encountered auger refusal. All exploration locations were positioned based on identifiable site features and documented on a site grading plan dated January 59, 2024, with locations considered approximate due to field-based positioning methods.
The subsurface exploration revealed consistent stratigraphic conditions across the site, with concrete and fill materials at surface elevations followed by brown sand and gravel layers containing miscellaneous debris including brick, concrete, ceramic, ash, and slag. Native soil conditions began at depths varying from 4.5 to 9 feet, characterized by fine to medium sand with silt and occasional gravel, becoming increasingly wet with depth. Groundwater was encountered in all test pits, ranging from approximately 8 to 13 feet below ground surface. Laboratory testing was performed on three samples collected from test pits TP-2, TP-3, and TP-5 by Thielsch Engineering Inc., with results indicating poorly graded sand with gravel classifications. The geotechnical data supports design and remediation activities for the proposed building foundation and site improvements outlined in the contract scope.
