About this file
This is a geotechnical data attachments document prepared by Tighe & Bond for the City of New Haven, Connecticut, supporting the environmental remediation and site improvement project at 198 River Street. The document contains subsurface exploration findings including a subsurface exploration plan, five test pit logs (TP-1 through TP-5) excavated by Red Technologies on March 1, 2024, and two boring logs (B-1 and B-2) drilled by Clarence Welti Associates Inc. on June 17, 2022. Test pits were excavated to depths ranging from 8.5 to 11 feet and terminated due to groundwater encounters and pit collapse, revealing subsurface conditions consisting of concrete slabs, fill materials containing miscellaneous debris (brick, concrete, ceramic, ash, slag, and petroleum-like odors), and native soil layers comprising brown sand and gravel with varying silt content and occasional boulders. Boring locations were based on approximate overlay mapping from a June 17, 2022 Clarence Welti Associates plan, with locations considered approximate due to field taping methodology.
Laboratory testing data from Thielsch Engineering Inc. includes particle size distribution analysis and Atterberg limits testing conducted on soil samples collected from test pits TP-2, TP-3, and TP-5 at depths between 5 and 10 feet. Sample 24-S-B519 from TP-2 at depth 5–9 feet yielded a brown poorly graded sand with gravel classification with 36.4 percent sand, 22.5 percent gravel, and 0.2 percent fines, with a moisture content of 30.9 percent. Samples from TP-3 and TP-5 underwent organic content testing only due to their deeper depths and saturation conditions. The geotechnical data indicates the presence of fill materials, contamination indicators including petroleum-like odors, and elevated groundwater conditions that will require management during the remediation and excavation phases of the project.
