Description

African society of human geneticsmeeting - the african society of human genetics (afshg) was formed in 2003 to foster engagement of researchers both within and outside of the continent in the study of the genetics of african populations and the association with human disease. To meet this objective, the society has provided a forum for scientists to interact and exchange information in the field of genetics and genomics. This has been successfully achieved through 14 prior meetings. The current proposal is requesting funding for the meeting in entebbe, uganda and the upcoming meeting in kinshasa, democratic republic of congo in 2027 to continue and expand the society's mission. The meetings recognize the need to not only engage research participants in africa but to promote the education of researchers to use and understand the massive amount of data being collected. The theme of the DRC meeting will be "rare and undiagnosed diseases of genetic origin" with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment. As the genomic revolution develops, IT is important that genetic research and translation into clinical practice captures the breadth of genetic ancestries of human populations including african populations so as to increase global impact. This, however, necessitates developing new skills to use the massive amounts of data being generated. Therefore, the meeting themes are designed to especially incorporate issues related to incorporating new analytical methods and bioinformatic analyses for the types of data currently being generated into clinical use. In addition, conducting ethical research and biobanking continues to be important areas of discussion.
