Project Grant R13AG104346
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Pennsylvania $425,235 on February 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to decode antigen-specific T cells in frontotemporal degeneration. The research investigates the role of CD8+ T cells recognizing cryptic peptides derived from TDP-43 pathology in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Approximately 50 percent of FTD cases involve TDP-43 pathology that generates cryptic exons; emerging evidence suggests these cryptic...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of California Irvine $431,750 on February 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the functional expansion of regulatory T cells to limit central nervous system autoimmunity. The research investigates key principles of regulatory T cell (Treg) expansion to address pathophysiology in CNS autoimmune conditions and promote myelin repair. The work employs...

The recipient is conducting research to identify and characterize antigen-specific CD4+ T cells, including regulatory T cells (Tregs), that respond to cryptic peptides derived from TDP-43 mislocalization in...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Translational Genomics Research Institute $305,960 on April 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to perform molecular cartography of glioma cell initiation and infiltration patterns using spatial transcriptomics. The recipient will conduct spatial transcriptomics on 254 image-mapped samples from 22 distinct tumors to characterize diffusion patterns...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded San Diego Biomedical Research Institute $541,750 on May 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to discover noncanonical autophagy modulators for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The project establishes two complementary intracellular functional screening platforms to identify novel autophagy-activating molecules that restore proteostasis in...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Cellsight Technologies, Inc. $1.754 million on September 20, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to characterize and validate [18F]F-ARAG, a positron emission tomography imaging agent, as a biomarker for detecting and quantifying intracerebral and systemic T cell activity in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The project addresses the inadequacy of current methods for studying T cell involvement in Alzheimer's disease in living patients....
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded The Trustees of The University of Pennsylvania $1,217,055 on July 17, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to investigate selective inhibition of T cell trafficking to the brain during acute SHIV infection in rhesus macaques. The research leverages a validated nonhuman primate model of HIV neuropathogenesis and persistence to determine how blocking T cell circulation during acute SHIV.D infection affects the...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded University of California, Los Angeles $236,250 on May 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct research on aging and T cell senescence in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). The research investigates how aging-associated T cell senescence predisposes to peripheral nervous system autoimmunity. The work tests the...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded $489,500 to Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason on February 20, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to identify molecular mechanisms that inhibit CNS resident memory T cells driving neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis. The project investigates CNS CD4+ tissue resident memory T cells (TRM) as a reservoir of autoreactive cells that sustains MS disease activity and resists...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Institute on Aging awarded Columbia University's Health Sciences Division a $3.21 million Project Grant (CFDA 93.866, Aging Research program) effective August 11, 2025, through July 31, 2029, to conduct research characterizing antigen-specific immune responses in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The research will employ an unbiased, multidisciplinary approach to identify self- and non-self peptides and antigens...
T CELLS IN THE BRAIN (TCB2027): DECODING T CELL TARGETS IN NEURODEGENERATION - ABSTRACT T CELLS ARE KEY CONTRIBUTORS TO NEUROINFLAMMATION AND NEURODEGENERATION, YET IDENTIFYING THEIR TARGETS AND ANTIGEN SPECIFICITIES IN HUMAN NEUROLOGICAL DISEASE REMAINS A MAJOR CHALLENGE. RAPID ADVANCES IN NEUROIMMUNOLOGY, INCLUDING SINGLE-CELL MULTIOMICS, TCR REPERTOIRE SEQUENCING, AND ANTIGEN-DISCOVERY PLATFORMS, HAVE BEGUN TO RESHAPE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF T CELL BIOLOGY IN THE CNS. BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS OF TCB2024 AND TCB2025, WHICH EACH CONVENED OVER 200 NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ATTENDEES, THE T CELLS IN THE BRAIN SERIES HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS THE PREMIER FORUM FOR INTEGRATING T CELL BIOLOGY WITH HUMAN NEURODEGENERATION. THESE MEETINGS GENERATED NEW MULTI-INSTITUTIONAL COLLABORATIONS, FOSTERED TECHNOLOGY EXCHANGE AMONG IMMUNOLOGISTS, NEUROPATHOLOGISTS, T CELL ENGINEERS, AND COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGISTS, AND SUPPORTED SEVERAL EMERGING JOINT GRANT APPLICATIONS AND SHARED DATASETS. "T CELLS IN THE BRAIN (TCB2027): DECODING T CELL TARGETS IN NEURODEGENERATION" WILL ADVANCE THIS MOMENTUM BY CONSOLIDATING RECENT PROGRESS AND PROMOTING INTERDISCIPLINARY DISCUSSION TOWARD PRECISION T-CELL-BASED THERAPIES. TCB REMAINS COMMITTED TO ACTIVE EFFORTS TO ENGAGE TRAINEES, AND JUNIOR RESEARCHERS. BY UNITING INTERDISCIPLINARY EXPERTISE AND STRENGTHENING COLLABORATIVE NETWORKS, TCB2027 AIMS TO ACCELERATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF EFFECTIVE T CELL-BASED INTERVENTIONS FOR NEURODEGENERATIVE DISORDERS.
