Description
Aspira?s takes its name derives from the spanish verb to aspire, ?aspirar.? IT is a member of the aspira national association, a leading national minority (latino) organization. Aspira?s mission is to educate for the transformation of puerto rico through the holistic development of the person and his/her environment. Our unique programmatic model includes the person, the family, and the community. Since 1969, aspira has been dedicated to youth leadership development through various educational projects. Every year, we provide services to over 3,153 youth and adults from underserved communities and families (i.e. first-generation college students, low-income students, out of school and at-risk secondary school students, heterosexual population at risk of getting infected with HIV or an STD, and veterans). Aspira main office is in the municipality of carolina, east of the capital SAN juan, with additional physical facilities around the island. The community?s support for aspira has been the product of years of work and thousands of youths served. As such, we are not an external resource to the area, but an integral and specialized resource within IT. Our attitude and care with our participants have generated credibility and trust in the services we deliver. Since 1989, aspira has successfully executed HIV/aids/STD education and prevention programs, sponsored by the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) in low-income communities with high-risk populations. Through our comprehensive high-impact HIV prevention core program we will provide services during the FY 2021-2122 to 800 participants: high risk youth (female/male and all sexual preferences) ages 13?29 and high risk adult heterosexual females/males ages 30-49 who are having unprotected SEX with people living with HIV, of unknown serostatus or have had a sexually transmitted disease in the last SI x months from the metropolitan and caguas health regions. Both of our target groups have been identified as a priority population in the PR integrated HIV surveillance, prevention and care plan (2017-2021) and in the 2012 PR HIV prevention jurisdictional plan.using the high-impact HIV prevention program (HIP) model for HIV positive and high-risk HIV negative persons, aspira will develop and enhance the following required comprehensive HIV prevention core and operational components: (1) diagnose; (2) treat; (3) prevent; (4) respond; (5) program promotion; (6) community engagement group/ consumer advisory board (CAB) and; (7) HIV planning group (HPG) described in the work plan. These combined activities will address the biological, social and structural determinants known to create the most significant barriers to early diagnosing of HIV; treating HIV quickly and effectively; preventing new HIV cases; responding quickly to HIV clusters and prevention of new cases in the target area.
