Description

First responders will be provided with education and training on carrying and administering naloxone, safety measures around illicit drugs associated with overdoses, and implementing harm reduction and trauma informed care practices. West virginia has been profoundly impacted by the opioid crisis and has the highest rate of overdose deaths in the nation. This program will be implemented in counties of fayette, logan, and mercer, which are in the top 10 counties in west virginia with the highest number of fatal overdoses from opioids. BBH recognizes that ready access to naloxone is key to saving lives, which is especially true in rural areas like west virginia, where individuals may experience longer EMS response times. This collaborative effort from local law enforcement and key community organizations will establish processes, protocols, and mechanisms for referral to the appropriate treatment and recovery supports in order to build capacity to replicate the program in other high need counties.
