Description
Today, michigan's review is a state-level structured process by which a multidisciplinary committee containing experts in a wide array of fields takes a holistic approach to identifying and reviewing cases of maternal death that occur during pregnancy, at delivery, or within one year of pregnancy. This committee makes recommendations for interventions to prevent future deaths. This funding opportunity would expand maternal mortality surveillance in michigan by providing access to additional maternal mortality-related data sources (e.g., key informant interviews, home visiting, and community mental health data), improving efficiency within the record request and abstraction process, allowing for robust data sharing with the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) through the maternal mortality review information application (mmria), and supplementing the current recommendation implementation and data dissemination efforts at the state and local level. We will utilize mmria to track case completion, perform data quality checks, and document the committee decisions regarding cause of death, preventability, contributing factors and recommendations. We anticipate annual reporting of statewide maternal mortality data, including recommendations, as well as topic-specific handouts on a regular basis. New staff will assist with record request and follow-up so that the project coordinator may in turn spend greater time on higher level activities, including recommendation dissemination thus enhancing timeliness of case review and improving efforts to decrease the number of preventable maternal mortality deaths. The michigan department of health and human services is already functioning to perform maternal mortality reviews, with an established committee reviewing all maternal deaths in the state and strong relationships with important collaborators. With the addition of new staff and new sources of data to our current workforce, we will be able to strengthen our maternal mortality review process and improve outcomes for women in michigan.
